Need help re access point DL speeds

I am not sure whether this is the right place to ask: but here goes.

Here is my current configuration:

Main router : Linksys E4200.

Secondary router : Linksys EA2700.

ISP is Comcast with Blast so I am getting around 60Mb/s with Speedtest.net via Ethernet or WiFI when the Main computers , laptop and tablet are connected to the Primary router.

In order to get better signal strength at further away places, I configured the EA2700 as an Access point. I had to use the Bridge Mode in the EA2700 because that's the only option I was given with the new GUI .

I use 5 Ghz, 40mhz BW and N only band . I am the only one in the neighborhood using this Freq so there is no overlap per Inssider.

The problem is that when the laptop or the tablet is connected to the EA2700, I get only half the DL speed( 30mb/s) . I get the full speed when they are connected to the Primary Router. I use Inssider to monitor the connection.

I think the 'Bridgemode" in the Linksys EA2700 is a LAN-LAN mode so I should not be getting the reduced speed.
There don't seem to be any other way to configure the Router with the new GUI . Other modes available static IP and other connections which are not applicable. Linksys bridge mode automatically disables DHCP and other router functions and is the recommended way per the Manual with the new GUI.

Is this the best I can get from this mode? Would I be able to get better speeds by rolling back the firmware to Classical view and manually disabling DHCP etc etc

Using bridge mode will for certain cut the bandwidth in half as you found out. Bridge mode is really to turn the router into a wireless switch which isn't ideal for an access point.

If you can't run an Ethernet cable to the access point then you will have to use bridge mode.

If you can run an Ethernet cable to the EA2700 then you can basically make it an access point by simply disabling DHCP. After that the main router will eventually give it an IP in the correct subnet, some routers have a button on the side to allow it to pick up the A/P, there is no need to use a static IP.

You can access and set up the EA2700 using the newly assigned IP. If you want the best possible connection speeds then use the 802.11n Only mode rather than mixed and use WPA2 security with AES encryption.

I am running an ethernet cable to the access point and connected it to the secondary router . The problem is that "Bridge Mode" is the only mode available in the new linksys GUI. In the Linksys Manual page 31 , it shows connecting the routers via ethernet cables. So i'ts not an RF bridge but an LAN-LAN connection .

That is exactly what I have done using the new Linksys "cloud GUI" . I am definitely in LAN-LAN cascading mode. The only option with Linksys new GUI is to change the mode to 'Bridge" . Now to do exactly per instruction ,I have to roll back the the firmware to Classical GUI, so I can disable the DHCP manually manually.

Now by invoking the 'Bridge mode" with the new GUI , I think I am basically doing the same thing except the disabling the DHCP is automatically done for me. All I need is to fill in the IP , default gateway etc.

I may consider rolling the firmware back to classical view where I am more familiar .

I even shut the WIFI off the main router to ensure no conflict , but the result is the same , 1/2 speed whenever the devices are connected to the access point via WIFI. Something must not be right using the "Bridge" mode in EA 2700.

Turn that bridge mode off...then follow instructions.

The new Linksys GUI wont let me manually turn off DHCP unless in "bridge" mode where it is done automatically . There is no other operating mode that allows me to turn off DHCP .

It looks like I will have to either roll back the firmware to traditional mode or to swap routers ie use the EA2700 as Primary router and the E4200 as Access point because the E4200 has the standard classical view where I can manually turn off dhcp as per instructions

I think I would rather swap routers as an experiment because I hate rolling back firmware in case I brick the router . Plus its a good test to check whether there is anything wrong with the WIFI of EA2700.

A router or firmware that won't allow you to turn off DHCP is pretty lame.

I believe I would reverse the routers in this case then just disable DHCP on the secondary router so the EA2700 is handling DHCP with the other router as the A/P.

As for the best possible bandwidth this is very important. > If you want the best possible connection speeds then use the 802.11n Only mode rather than mixed and use WPA2 security with AES encryption.

Using inSSIDer office will show you which channels to use and can help you get the most from your wireless.

I have set the Primary router at the low end of the freq spectrum and the access point at the higher end of the freq spectrum. I am also using Inssider as well.

So either I roll back EA2700 to the traditional view or swap routers . I think swapping routers is easier because I dont run into the possibility of bricking the EA2700

Yes seems easier that way.

5GHz is great, I use it myself, the one draw back is that 5GHz doesn't go through walls nearly as well as 2.4GHz so it's better for covering large rooms or outdoor areas without too many obstacles in the way.

I really not a fan of these so called cloud based firmware's.
