Limited wifi or no wifi

The problem started when I first got my laptop, but it was an uncommon thing. During the time I had windows 8, the wifi would turn limited maybe once or twice every few months. Then came along windows 8.1. I was excited for this, as I was still minor issues with windows 8, I thought they had fixed almost everything. It was a stupid mistake not to wait a few days. The first problem I had, was my touchpad not working correctly. I found the problem maybe 3 months ago and fixed it. But the one problem I have now is my wifi connection.

Every 1-300 minutes, my wifi becomes limited. I'm a gamer, and it is pretty annoying racking up abandonments in DOTA 2.

My temporal fix for the problem would be to troubleshoot my wifi, most of the time it would fix it, saying the my connection is broken or the default gateway is not available. Although sometimes it does not. The wifi icon becomes a cable, with the computer screen and a little Red Cross. For me to fix this, I have to restart my computer, go into device manager, and reinstall my network adapter, but even then it still may remain not working. I receive a code 10, This device cannot start. It is a Ralink adapter, and I realise many people have had problems with this adapter too.

I have tried numerous ways of fixing it, such as;

Disable device sleeping
Netsh-ing via cmd
Change my network adapter driver thingy, (like changing to mediatek, Broadcom, etc. Most of the time works temp. Sometimes gives code 10)
And a few more I can't remember right now, but if you suggest it, I will tell you if I have tried it, if I haven't, then I will try it and report back.

I am very experienced at computer stuff, and it is quite painful to admit I have come across a computer problem I haven't been able to fix.

If you need more information, don't be afraid to ask xD

This code 10 problem has been around for awhile. Not completely sure which machines are affected but the problem is widespread and is fixable. The link below explains what is required to fix the problem. Basically you should reset back to Windows 8, then update to 8.1 as usual then install all the Windows updates again.

The problem was caused from updates which were installed in the wrong order, Msoft has since fixed the problem with the update sequence. There are a few pseudo fixes like installing the server 2012 app or removing the problematic KB updates but the best fix seems to be resetting the system and going from there.

None of them worked, I'm thinking of buying a copy of win7 professional if this doesn't work out for me.

But I would much rather stay on win8 and save data, time and money.

Resetting the system back to windows 8 then updating to 8.1 then installing all the updates didn't work?

This is the required procedure.

What type of system/PC/laptop/tablet are we talking about here?

What is the make/model of the router?

Sorry my bad, I didn't see the resetting bit, maybe I should use those glasses that were given to me a week ago...

Anyway, I'm sorry for wasting a bit of your time, i just clicked the link and uninstalled and installed the KB stuff, idk why I didn't bother to read your post here properly.

One more thing, would the "resetting back to windows 8" mean restore to factory default? Or refreshing the pc? Or something else that I'm unfamiliar with?

Resetting is what you want, refresh is different.

I also need > What type of system/PC/laptop/tablet are we talking about here?

What is the make/model of the router? In case the reset and clean install doesn't completely fix the problem I have a few more tricks up my sleeve.

Ok, I'm unable to to any resets right now because I would like to backup my data.

So I was wondering if you could take the ideas up your sleeves and place them into a post?

My computer is a laptop, HP Pavilion G6 (I'm not sure if that's the full name or not)

My internet is Sky, although I'm almost definitely sure that this isn't the problem, because my ipad, which is what I use for this forum, my phones, my old laptop (which ran windows 7 ultimate) and my brother's mac all connect to the internet fine, despite the fact that my internet is really bad xD

If this helps, I went to speedtest.net and ran this.

Download speed - 2.59 Mbps
Upload speed - 0.56 Mbps
Ping - 25ms

Although my download speed in general is anything between 50-350 Kbps when I'm downloading files
When I'm uploading to youtube, my I upload at 0.12 Kbps - ish. It's horrible, so I upload elsewhere. (For a 200mb vid, it takes maybe 4-9 hours, big range, I know)

So yeah, I'm not sure if I just wasted my time or not providing that info, but hopefully it helps.

The problem stopped for about 2 months. I was extremely happy, no more cutting out in the middle of something.

But now it's back with a vengeance. Also I've noticed a few other things...

- the problem fixed soon after i uninstalled Skype for windows 8, but now it's back, I haven't touched the windows 8 store since.

-Most of the time, this happens while I'm in game (every single one of them) or watching a video.

- also since my fan sucks and breaks so easily, my laptops fan is "loud", when it starts getting louder, the internet drops out more frequently
