Solved Broadcom NetXtreme connected to LAN but no internet

Afternoon all. First post on here so be nice

I've just bought an HP N54L which has a Broadcom NetXtreme NIC. Bit of a bargain and since I've never had the slightest issue with my HP N40L (running Server 2008 R2) I decided to get a new one

I did a bit of research on the hardware and so made sure I flashed the BIOS to the latest rev. I then installed Win8 Pro 64 on it - the installer went smoothly with no hiccups. It received an IP via DHCP as well as the default gateway address. I can see my other devices on the same subnet

Now the problem...

My neighbour and I share one internet connection, him on (eg) 192.168.0.0/24 and me on (eg) 192.168.1.0/24.

My Router is 192.168.1.1 and his Router is 192.168.0.1. My Router handles all traffic from my subnet to his. His Router handles his own kit plus the link to the internet. Neither Router is set to restrict access by hardware (eg: by MAC)

While my N54L could see all the devices on my subnet, and I could browse it's shares from one of my other computers, it cannot access the internet. I do not receive a ping back from my neighbours router

I have temporarily disabled the Windows Firewall and any other protection during testing. Win8 is a clean build with no 3rd party software on it as yet
I have tried using netsh to reset the tcp stack and ipv4
I've checked all routes on the N54L and they match all my other devices
I've double checked both my Router and my neighbours Router (I have administrative access to it)

I tried the default driver on the Windows DVD, also the latest for Win8 on Broadcoms website as well as (just to test) the latest for Server 2012. Tried setting the network as both Public and Private (via a re-install since it wouldn't let me swap type). Tried both DHCP and static IP. I only have the 1 Default Gateway, which is my own Router

Whatever I do, this PC seems stuck in it's own subnet

Oh, and I've checked the network cable too which works fine

My other kit (which all works fine) is a mix of: Server 2008 R2, Server 2008, Server 2003, Win7 64, Win7 32, XP SP3, Linux of various flavours, and Android

So my suspicion is that this is a Win8 "feature" - any suggestions guys? Any particular settings within the NIC itself?

I may stick my Server 2k8 R2 build on it just to test my theory, and prove that the PC with it's NIC works fine and that the problem is limited to Win8, but hope that someone on here is familiar with this issue. I bought Win8 because I want Hyper-V and want to tinker with Storage Spaces

Cheers

Is the HP N54L the only machine that can't access the internet?

You say stuck in it's own subnet? Is this machine showing a different subnet or gateway than the other ones?

Can you post the ipconfig/all from this machine?

Hi Chev

Yes, that's the only machine that can't reach the neighbours router. The PC is on the same subnet as all my other PCs and it has the same DG set. I'll fire it up and copy the output for you

Did you define the DNS server when you set up the static IP?

I'm also not seeing any IPv6 or ISP information under tunnel adaptors where it usually shows up.

I'm not sure why this one machine isn't connecting to the internet but it may help to define the same DNS that the primary router is using. I should also assume that the assigned static IP is outside the DHCP range that the router is using.

I already tried that. I defined both the router as the DNS server, and also the ISP DNS servers (both options work fine on all my other machines on that subnet) but no difference. The issue appears to be routing rather than DNS - not only will it not connect to the internet, it can't get to the neighbours router (the one which is actually the internet gateway) by IP so DNS doesn't really come into it

I temporarily disabled IPv6 (I know, it can mess up some services) just to test if it was interfering with IPv4 routing, and the tunnel adapter shows exactly the same as the Win7 32 PC which I'm typing this on - which works fine

If the problem is routing "which makes sense because of this rather strange network set up" then all the machines connected to this router would be having the same problem.

Have you tried using DHCP rather than static IP?

Maybe if you can post the ipconfig/all from another machine in this network that isn't having connection problems?

Hahah not that strange! I'm on one subnet, my neighbour is on an other - just like a mini work network where different business units share a location

Yeah DHCP was the first thing I tried

Yes and as you can see the Win 7 machine is picking up a different gateway than the Win 8 machine.

Yes setting it correctly should help LOL, laughing with you not at you. :)

Yeah, I obviously rejigged my setup. .1 is the Switch and .100 is the Router - it used to be the other way around

Cheers - fresh pair of eyes to help look at things methodically!

A configurable switch how cool. Obvious problem yes, you would have got it eventually. Feel free to mark as solved. :)
