Can't access files on my own drive

Everything I can find to get round this problem involves right clicking on the HD->properties->Security->Owner and then going on to changing a few settings.

There is no owner tab! Is this an 8.1 thing? Have they removed it? Van I get it back?

Are you working from the root of the drive or the Users folder which is shared out be default?

I don't understand the question but todays problem is I am unable to drop a fold from my dektop (located in Drive C: an SSD drive) to E:/users/me/pictures

Another day there'll be a folder or file I cant access on the E drive.

When I right click on E and look at properties - security then there is no tab saying owner.

Just to recap C is an SSD with the operating system windows 8.1 and E is a 1TB drive.

There is no OWNER these days it's now SYSTEM.

The default settings for a locally formatted drive should look like the picture.

There needs to be check marks for the Authenticated Users share so you can access the drive.

The Admin name should be the same one as is showing up on your C: drive.

Yes mines like that and permission are set to full control but still I cant access some folders. I have been using a program called take ownership each time I needed access to a folder but I would just like total access to my drive.

I know about the take ownership add-on although it shouldn't be required if the drive is shared out correctly. Permissions settings can get pretty messed up once you start messing with the security settings.

Are you sure that Authenticated Users have the check marks per the second picture?

If you require access to all files and folders on the drive including system files then you would need add "Everyone" to the share list of the E: drive Properties, using the Edit settings then add check marks for full access.

Just hit the "Edit" button then the Add button, then type Everyone where it says>Enter the objects name to select, then hit OK and add check marks for full access as required, hit Apply to save settings etc.

I have had this issue after I reload windows on a drive with the others unplugged. When iplug in the drives, they think they still belong to the last operating system. I have to go in and take control through the permissions tab through the various folders starting all the way back to the root folder FIRST. Just keep adding permissions to any leftover errant folders and eventually you will own all the folders.

Yes taking permissions one at a time when needed works, buit I want to be constantly backing up the 1Tb of data and that's currently not possible
