    Internet Options Proxy Server setting won't stay off.

    Hello,

    I have strange issue with Windows 8.1 x64 Pro with Media Center. Since it was upgraded from 8, there have been issues with Software Store. Despite internet connection working fine with Firefox and other applications, Store would not connect to the internet. After long investigation I found out that Proxy server setting in Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings must be disabled in order to get Store working again. For some reason proxy server only stays disabled for the current session, which means when the windows is rebooted it comes back enabled again. My question is how to make it stay permanently disabled, as I don't use any proxy. Thanks.

    Try resetting IE11, Tools> Internet Options Advanced tab, Reset button.

    Others have this same problem not sure why.

    Encounted the exact same issues when trying to change from my proxy server to use a proxy.pac file, or to just turn proxy server settings off completely.

    By default it will keep proxy lan settings enabled like this: Click image for larger version

    If you want to disable the proxy server its usually as simple as unticking the "use proxy server" box. in windows 8.1 this is not the case, upon closing that dialogue box it will reset back to being enabled again. The only way i have found around this is as follows.
    Click image for larger version

    The proxy.pac address must use // and not \\ as for some reason if you use the lan address it automatically changes it back to using the lan proxy. dont worry if you do not have a proxy.pac file if you have "automatically detect settings" selected it should default to no proxy. but stupidly enough this is the only way to disable a proxy server in windows 8.1

    (this has happend a few times randomly with windows 7 enterprise and resetting internet explorer to defaults fixes this, in windows 8.1 however that does not help at all)

    You can also manually set it through registry editing if your an advanced user
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
    "MigrateProxy"=dword:00000001
    "ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001
    "ProxyHttp1.1"=dword:00000000
    "ProxyServer"="http://server:port"

    1 for enable and 0 for disable.

    I started using windows 8.1 today in an enterprise environment and this was the first issue i ran into.

    By default Internet Explorer does no such thing.

    There are many rogue programs that can cause this problem but IE does not change this setting by default or otherwise. It's something else forcing it to change the setting.

    Internet Options-> Connections has "Some settings are managed by your system administrator."

    Click image for larger version

    Right clicking on the Internet Explorer icon and running as administrator, and selecting only “Automatically detect settings” fixed the problem for me. The problem may have originated with the conduit malware.

    I had this same problem, i.e. "proxy server only stays disabled for the current session". I tried just about every solution suggested on this any many other forums, with no success.

    Someone mentioned that malware could be causing the problem, so I downloaded and ran Microsoft's malware tool which found nothing.

    Then I downloaded and ran the free version of Malwarebytes: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Protect, Detect & Remove Malware From Your PC

    I was surprised to find a number of malware files infecting my laptop (one week old Dell XPS 12-9Q33). After quarantining these files, my computer works perfectly. I can now access the Microsoft Store app (my original problem).

    I am having similar problems as the people here. I have run Malwarebytes and CCleaner and removed tons of bad junk. The problem still persists. Based on previous comments from Samarai I have ran minitoolbox. I am hoping someone can identify this. Looking at the log file it seems to be centering around a program called backgroundtaskhost.exe. Can anyone help me with this?
