Windows 8.1: Constant disconnections "Default Gateway N/A"

I'm going nuts. I see that the constant "default gateway is not available" error is a common one for Windows 8. My connection drops every five minutes or less. It appears to get much worse when my brother is online on his computer on the same network. I've searched for solutions before, but none have worked so far. I've manually set the IP, I've turned off the power management option on the network, I've restarted my computer, I've made sure that my driver is updated, I've restarted my computer multiple times...nada. Please help me!

Chloe! I'm by no means an expert on this but I just dealt with this very problem yesterday. In the device manager under your network adapters try looking for a driver labeled Kernal Debuging and uninstall it. It is supposed to help your computer but actually does the opposite in regards to having you connect to the internet.

Thanks draconith, but there was no such driver under Network Adapters on my computer. But thanks for trying!

Another confusing thing about this problem is that it only appears to happen at my house. My computer has no problem connecting with my boyfriend's wifi or the wifi at my school. However, from what I've looked at this /is/ a problem that's specific to Windows 8, and it's not happening to anyone else in my famly (they all use Mac so they don't have to deal with the shitstorm that is Windows 8).

This is getting more and more confusing, and because it only seems to happen on my home network, I don't think that bringing it to a repair place would be helpful.

Which points to the router requiring a firmware update. Common problem around here.
