Wireless network configuration issue with Windows 8.1

Hello,

I faced a strange issue on wireless network configuration after doing a clean install of Windows 8.1.
I succeeded to find a workaround that maybe helpfull for others but I am still interested to read an explanation of this issue.
So as indicated above, I made a clean install of windows 8.1 pro on a brand new PC I built up myself featuring a Gigabyte Wifi/BT PCI-e card (GC-WB300D) . After the install, the wifi connection from my home router was immediately detected and I saw the icon and indication on the bottom right of the screen "network available" then I right click on it and a bar on the left of my screen appeared. I click in the side bar on the network icon I was willing to connect and I was prompted to enter my login and password rather than the wifi security key so of course the connection to my (home) wifi network failed as the security key was never configured for this connection. I opened up the network and sharing center to find a menu item to configure my connection by keying th security key without success. I worked around this issue by creating a new connection using the same SSID of the connection already detected automatically by windows as there is a field in this menu to enter the security key.
Any explanation ?

Are you using a Windows live ID to sign in with?

Maybe the link will help as I'm not completely sure what the problem might be.

Thanks for the link Chev65.
This is interesting because when I follow the instruction of the link content, I can reach the menu in the upper picture below but the right click on the network icon is not working so I cannot see the menu represented in the lower picture with the "view connection properties" leading to a menu where you have to input the security key for the connection.
Is there a menu to configure the behavior in such case or can it be a regression on Windows 8.1 ?

You can also move your cursor to the bottom right corner of the screen to activate the Charms. Click or tap “Settings" and then the Network icon.

Locate the network’s name (Security Set Identifier - SSID) from the list of available networks and right-click or press and hold on it. Click or tap “View Connection Properties."

Seems to be a regression or a different page which shows similar settings. For this page go to 'Settings, Change PC Settings, Network' then click on the one that says WiFi then you will end up at the following page.

It seems as if there is a problem setting up the wireless connection, you mention that you are getting a User name password prompt when you are trying to set up the wireless connection? This sounds like a different problem to me. That is why I asked if you are using a Windows live ID to sign in with?

Hi Chev65

Sorry, I forgot to answer to your question about Windows Live ID in my previous post: the answer is No I did not sign in with it.

I can reach the same page you printed out by following the same "path" than you. In my case the security type indicate "Open" as I just cipher with a WEP key (I know it is a weak option but I am leaving at the countryside without many neighbourghs so it is not very risky)

You are right the problem I am reporting occured when I tried to set-up (configure) initialy the connection as I was never prompt to enter the network security key (WEP key in my case). In my previous post I was linking to it because I was not able to access a menu to edit the WEP key.

Most every driver for Windows 8 does not support WEP security so changing the security to WPA2 with AES will work better. If your router doesn't have these features then it's out of date and you could try updating the firmware on the router.

You really should set up a Windows live ID account to avoid problems like this. You pretty much have to associate an email address with your Windows live ID account.
