I have a new desktop with Windows 8 that replaces a Windows XP system. I plugged in the existing Ethernet cable to my router, but I cannot contact my (ancient) Windows 95 system in my local network. My XP system did so just fine. What can I do to get my new system to talk to the old 95 system?

In XP and earlier the default Workgroup name was MSHOME. In Vista and later it has been changed to WORKGROUP. That may not be all it takes to fix it up. But it's most likely the largest stumbling block. If you right click Computer, then click Properties, click Advanced System Settings, then click the Computer Name tab. It will show the name of the workgroup there.

Edit: Also look on the Win9x machine for the workgroup name. Post what you find.

Edit2: also it's helpful if you give details. See this post for guidance.

OK, my W-8 system shows "Workgroup" as the name. On my '95 system, I can see, under Network Neighborhood/Entire Network, two groups, MSHome and Workgroup. Further, under Workgroup I can see both my Windows 8 system name, and my wife's, also on the network. When I click (on the '95 system) on my system's name, I get this:
"<name> is not accessible. This system is not supported by the network."

When I click on my wife's system name (also Windows 8) I see:

"You must supply a password to make this connection." It then gives my a place to enter the password. None work. I also notice her system name is shown as \\<name>\IPC$ which I would expect to be just <name>. I don't know why the two systems are seen differently from my '95 system. Bottom line, if I could get just one to see the '95 system, I'd be happy. I'm trying to get a file off the old '95 system, but it doesn't have a USB port, just a floppy drive. So, sneaker-net is not going to work.

Hello,
I just saw two "edits" to your first answer (did they get added later?). Anyway, here is a screen shot from my Win8 machine in response to ipconfig -all:

Edit: my Win95 machine's work group name is "MSHOME".

If there are no other machines involved then the easiest thing to try is change the Win9x workgroup name to WORKGROUP, as that's going to be the default for awhile it seems. Log off both machines and log back on. See if you can get anything.
