Windows 8.1: files in folders on network drive not visible

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 and I can no longer see the files inside the folders on my networked drive. Before I upgraded I could see them, after the upgrade - not so much. The folders are fine, I can see them, just no files visible. There's no network issues as the files are visible from my Win7 machines and my wife's Win8 machine. All the standard default sharing and viewing settings are correct. Even if I put the direct path in File Explorer is tells me there's nothing there. I'm absolutely baffled. I have never seen this particular type of sharing issue before. I'm a pretty savvy Network Admin so the basic troubleshooting (and standard sharing settings) has been covered. But at this point I'm pretty much open to suggestions. Thanks

One bit of key info, I do not (and have never) use Homegroups - just Workgroups. And the drive is attached to my wireless router (ASUS). So setting a homegroup wouldn't solve the issue.

The settings in the link has helped fix this problem many times, it may work for you as well. The example in the link was to access shares on windows 2k server but it's also worked to allow access to drives attached to routers.

I just got around to trying out your tip, but no good news I'm afraid. I appreciate the info though. Definitely something to keep in my bag of tricks if I ever see something like that. I'm wondering if it might be that I need to update the firmware of the Asus router. I haven't updated it since 8.1 came out and I'm thinking that there may be a need to do so. I'll check it out and post back.

If I knew which Asus router you were using I could probably be more specific about how to fix the problem.

The firmware might help I agree.

So I haven't found a solution to this issue, however, I now believe that there is something far more sinister at work here with 8.1. It's not my router as it has the latest firmware after all. I discovered this morning that there are several other issues that I am now having since the upgrade. I cannot install or uninstall any new devices (says it's installing then just sits there spinning), I have no connectivity to previously working network printer (error printing to network device), and I cannot change some settings in Outlook (cannot set default data file; cannot create new data file, .pst - option grayed out). It's really just to0 buggy at this point to continue to use so I am just going back to Win7Ultimate. I always thought that Win8 was a mess, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt and used it anyway for a while. However, 8.1 just reaffirms my opinion that this is an operating system that, on it's own merits, should be doomed to failure. But it will probably succeed anyway just do to the shear volume of Microsoft screaming that we need this. I wanted to like Win8, I really did, but it's just not something that's gonna work for me.

Well those types of problem have a completely different cause. I was unaware of all these bugs on this particular system.

Windows 8.1 works just fine I can assure you, the problems start when a Windows 8 system was upgraded while it had either system file integrity problems or store component problems or if the User folder or AppData folder was moved from the default locations.

Most of these update problems can be fixed by running a system file scan then a store component repair scan per the directions in the link below.

    Correct solution to the problem

just don't login to your laptop with Microsoft account (like outlook or msn email). Logout from it and problem solved.
Instead create a offline user and password.

I faced the same problem. Then I realised that in using Window 8 and window 8.1 , I did only one changement. I logged in from microsoft account. THen I logged out. And my same problem solved. The error that occured may be dueto synchronisation from Skydrive online account which is from microsoft.
