Wireless disconnects when laptop lid is closed

I purchased a Toshiba Satellite S55t-A5238 rencently. It has Windows 8, not 8.1. The network wireless adaptor is Realtek RTL8188E Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC.

Unfortunately, when I close the laptop lid, the wireless internet connection disconnects.

I tried the following:

  • I made sure to go to the Realtek Wireless Network Adaptor in Device Manager and unchecked the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
  • I also went to the Power Options and set it so it does Nothing when the lid is closed.
  • In Advanced Power Settings, I changed the Wireless Adaptor Settings' Power Saving Mode to Maximum Performance.
  • I updated the wireless network adaptor driver and that did not help. I also removed it and put back an older driver which did not help either.
  • I removed the Toshiba Eco power management program that came with the computer.

I restarted the computer several times and I still have this problem. The other laptops with Windows 7 at our house do not do this. Now, I have to leave the laptop lid open when I am downloading something that will take awhile because the wifi shuts off after a few moments when I close the lid.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to fix this? I'm not sure if this is a Toshiba problem or Windows 8 problem. I'm tempted to return the laptop since this is quite annoying.

I tried searching the forum first but couldn't find anything helpful.
