new user... chrome icon doesn't connect me to internet

I just spent 1000 bucks on a fully loaded HP Envy. I need this computer for work... I need to be productive.
I like some features but others are very frustrating.
-after the first day, the tile for chrome started giving me a "can't access internet" message. I can get to through the Google tile, but that is a version of google that will not allow me to open multiple windows
-clicking on a download pdf link gives me a "can't access internet" message.
any ideas on theses issues... ? firewall?

Can I run windows 8 like windows 7 while m getting the kinks out of this system? I really can't afford to waste all this time.

You may install StartIsBack to get the Start button similar to Windows 7.

Instead of using Chrome, is it possible for you to switch to the latest IE which is IE 11? I also use Firefox.
