Must reboot to connect to network

A cold boot results in no network connection. My network displays as available, but the PC can't see it. A warm reboot connects as it should. Checked for driver updates to the Intel adapter 4965AGN, only to see Intel no longer supports it, and Dell tells me I have the newest driver available for this 9400 Inspiron. All worked well with Win 8, but no joy with 8.1. Guess I'll sit tight for a while to see if MS or someone here comes up with a fix. May have to check into a newer adapter for this laptop - if such a thing is available.

Perhaps this link to the Intel drivers for Windows 8.1 might help.

    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&DwnldID=23231

According to Intel you need to uninstall both of the Intel 4962AGN drivers + connection software then install the new one.

You could also try the Automatic update utility from Intel for finding the correct driver.

    Still No Joy

I downloaded/installed the Proset/Wireless program, but it didn't help. Didn't have any luck with the other links either. The Driver Update Utility didn't find ANY Intel devices on my laptop.

Additionally, this link (Intel® Wi-Fi Products — Intel® Wireless Products and Microsoft Windows 8.1* - "... ADAPTERS NOT SUPPORTED ...) says my existing driver (4965AGN) isn't supported in Win 8.1. Perhaps it will be later - by either MS or Intel.

I'm puzzled about "... need to uninstall both of the Intel 4962AGN drivers ..." since I'm currently using an Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN driver, per Device Manager. Or is that just part of a generic cut/paste offered to help others?

I doubt it matters, but I went from Vista to 8.0 to 8.1.

    Thanks for the input.

No idea why the Intel driver scanner said you don't have an Intel NIC but that may be part of the problem as they also mention there are no driver updates for the 4965agn.

    Additional Notes:
The driver version of the following products will not update. The Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software version will be updated.

    Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
    Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
    Intel® WiFi/WiMAX Link 5350
    Intel® WiFi Link 5100 AGN
    Intel® WiFi Link 5300 AGN

Then further down the page it says: This download is valid for the product(s) listed below.
    Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

There are two different Intel links to the same Intel driver which is the same 16.5.3 Although they were released on different dates.
Not sure if the new one will work as Intel mentions no driver updates for the 4965agn but there are connection software updates.

The comment on uninstalling both refers to if the Intel connection software was installed or not, it's not a generic comment.

After reading up on this particular Intel NIC, about the only solutions that have it working would be to change the routers encryption setting to either mixed AES+TKIP or only use TKIP+WPA personal security which is an outdated encryption but may work better with the outdated drivers you appear to be stuck with. After changing the encryption it's best to create a new wireless profile for the connection.

I agree, it's confusing when Intel says a product won't update, and in the same page, displays downloads for that specified product. Reminiscent of when I did IT work for Cat.

We may be chasing our tails here. I ran across a Dell E1705 802.11n Mini-PCIe Wireless Card NJ449 as an upgrade option, but haven't checked it out yet for problems/opportunities, etc. In the meantime, I'll put this machine into a less demanding area - kitchen duty for the wife.

    Thanks for everything.

Yes the encryption change is about the only way to get that old adaptor working but that also means lower performance because AES encryption is the only way to achieve full wireless N speeds.

I like your idea, just use a newer USB or PCI-e NIC and have no more problems.

I read about endless problems with the 4965agn.
