    network and sharing center

    Hello
In Win 8.1, I see private(which I want) and the number three, in the network and sharing center.
I connect the gateway to the desktop with an Ethernet cable and the printer to the gateway with another Ethernet cable. Both the printer and the latop work wirelessly with the gateway.

Should the number three be in the network and sharing center, or should I change this? If it needs changing what should I do?
    Thank you
    Peter

    Hi Peter2,

Could you provide a screenshot please? Do you have a single PC arrangement or homegroup setup?

    network sharing center Win 8.1

    Hello
I received the following reply from a friend," Every time your network adapter gets reinstalled, either by driver fault, manually, or OS upgrade, it increments the private network number. It is a Windows annoyance and has been for years.

I hope this helps unless you have a fix. The advice was that it could be hacked but I feel incapable of maneuvering with the registry.

I basically wanted to know why it is # 3 - if it can easily be fixed then I would do so.
    Thank you
    Peter

Yep! I agree with your friend and I am also concerned that you have configured a private network instead of a public network "if" you are running a single PC (but you did not answer that specific question).

Again, the number 3 has nothing to do with your concern over being hacked but I think there is more of a concern with you having your access shown as a private network. However, since this area is not my strong point, I would ask someone else to intervene and assist you from here.

    Good luck.

You can also change the permissions to allow for changing the network name but this usually isn't required.

    Hi Chev65,

Glad to see you responding so I have to ask. Should he be concerned about establishing a private network? Doesn't that lessen the security that is more available when you have created a public network? Also, I think that tutorial will only change the name but it won't get rid of the 3 designation. Am I correct?

    Thanks,

Yes you can get rid of the three as well though sometimes you need to go into the registry depending on where the number shows up. The tutorials show both ways.

Private or public depends on where you are using the machine. Public tightens the restrictions on shared folders in public areas.

    OK thanks for that!

OK, so if he has a single PC, then should he create a public network?

I would think for at home private would be best, depends on the situation I guess.

You must give out more rep than me because when ever I try to give rep it says spread around more.

I really need to get out and read more posts here instead of always stuck in the networking section.

Probably so because I look for opportunities to allocate the maximum number of reps each day which is 10 BTW, so I usually don't have too much trouble repping a fellow forum member a second time on short notice. Thanks again!
