Solved Slow internet

Hi guys, first of all let me apologize if my english is not that good. You see, here in Argentina our native language is spanish.

That being said, let me tell you what brings me here. A couple of months ago I got my brand new HP all in one (not the finest computer out there, but still pretty good for me!) with Windows 8 installed. Chrome was one of my first must haves. The problem was that it worked, yeah it did, but quite slowly. Websites took their time to load. I'm not saying that it took 1 minute to load Facebook, but probably around 7 seconds.

Yes, it is not the biggest deal, I know, but my previous computer with Windows7 worked a lot faster! My internet speed is around 12MB (checked in speedtest). I've got my HP and my older computer conected to the very same router and the browsers speed is significantly different when comparing them. So I waited till Windows 8.1 came out, wondering if it was a software issue. But same results came with the actualization. Tried Mozilla (Fire and Waterfox), same results (even worse, loading videos in HD was something that I couldn't even think of).

So here I am, using IE 11. I really don't know why, but it's a hell lot faster than the others, even getting 669 points in Peacekepper, while Chrome got over 950. The thing is I really miss some Chrome features, and Gmail is not as fluid in IE as it was in Chrome.

So, my older computer, with the same internet connection, with and older software, and with the same browser, is pretty much faster when it comes to loading websites, than my HP all in One with Windows 8.1. The problem is just when it loads websites, NOT when I download stuff!

Things already tried:
-IP & Flush DNS
-Ccleaner
-Reinstall Chrome
-Check/Uncheck almost every combination in Chrome config options
-Use Ethernet or Wi-Fi
-Power Saver Mode: Off
-Both Chrome App and Chrome Desktop

Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance, guys!

Hey! I uninstalled Avast and it seems to be running a lot faster! Thanks a lot!
Which Antivirus should I install now? I mean, in order to avoid having a similar issue.

Thanks again!

Hi Wagner,

That is unbelievable! I just took a guess because it is causing so many other issues as well. So, for now, I am staying with just Defender until Avast is fixed because I have been with them since the beginning; however, if you want some additional ideas, I would suggest that you mark this thread as solved and start a new thread, asking for recommendations for a good (free?) Win 8.1 3rd-party AV program that is known to work without issues? And you might want to make note that you had problems with Avast 2014 to avoid it being recommended again. Good luck and thanks for that acknowledgement.

I installed the newest version of Avast on Win 8.1 and it does not slow down even relatively modest internet speed of 8/2 Mb/s. Avast acknowledged that issue but I think it's fixed now.

Installed Avast 9 free a week ago and so far did not notice any problems, some good improvements even. It's on 3 computers with W8.1 and so far, so good, even on other 2 computers that are much less powerful than this "main " one. Both other ones are 2 core without the SSD. The memory usage is down to 8 MB from 12 MB on ver. 8.

@CountMike: Avast 9? Is that Avast 2014 known by another name? If you are so inclined, could you please do this test and see if you get the same results as I did? If so, then I will still be holding back on a reinstall. I would appreciate your test effort and will acknowledge you accordingly for your efforts:

See post #14 and thank you:

Yes it's Avast 2014, they offered it as Avast 9, Full version number is "2014.9.0.2006"
Just changed Power Settings and it saved properly. I normally do not use any power saving options and all is always ON because this computer is always on and something is running on it. I use "maximum Performance" setting and modify it so nothing ever goes to "Sleep" mode.

I was hoping that you would just try the "restore default settings link." Could you please try that because I have not found anyone that has been able to make that work.

Oh, that, no it would not restore Power settings to default, "Access Denied ".

OK. Thank you so much for that important confirmation. It appears that Avast is causing many issues for "some" but not for all, and since I was included in the "some", I cannot go back "until" I am assured that all issues are resolved. Thanks again.

Something new, forgot to again make my settings to Power Plan after attempting to go to default and when restarted computer it was back to defaults even as it refused to do it immediately.
