After installing Windows 8.1: Unstable WiFi download speed

    Hello Eight-forums,

Since I installed Windows 8.1, my download speed gets huge drops. My ping and upload speeds are fine, but only my download speed has problems. I am using a wireless network adapter: Asus PCE-N15. Before I installed W8.1, I had no issues at all with it. I already tried installing different drivers and I am now using the latest version from the chipset maker Realtek (RTL8192CE-VA4 version 2007.12.419.2013). I installed it manually through the device manager. I also use the wireless connection 802.11 g, because my router is not compatible with n. I do think it is a software based problem, because the hardware is only 2 months old and worked fine on Windows 8. Other computers in my house don't have any instability problems. I can maybe use a cable for internet, but that would go through my hole house, so that's not a solution.

I added a picture of the ipconfig /all maybe it is useful for your guys:

Here is also a picture of the latest speed-test I did (ping and upload are fine, but download is very bad, it stays 0 at the start for some seconds and then it gets a big peak. This test is one of the worse):

Also here is the graph of the download speed, it is really not stable:

I hope someone finds a solution for me, because I am getting really frustrated after some time. I also don't want to reinstall 8. I also have heard that many other people have different WiFi problems with Windows 8.1.

Edit: I already changed the channel of my router, so it is not interfering with each other.

    Greetings killerboye.

Have you tried the Asus driver as it seems both the Realtek and the Asus drivers are a bit problematic with Windows 8.1.

I am staying with the realtek ones. They gave me always the best connecton. Also I think I have solved my problem. I updated all my motherboards drivers AND updated the bios. In the changelog of the bios, it said that pci-e devices have better compatibility so I think the problem is solved. Finally after so many days ... At least asus has to update their drivers to 8.1 also, maybe I will get a even bigger boost.

Thanks for all your help chev65.

Yes updating the bios and the chipset drivers can fix many problems so it's good you went to the gigabyte site for that.

It looks like the chipset, bios, and drivers were all recently updated to 8.1 for your Gigabyte board so it's no wonder they are working better.

Also in the description of the new bios version, it says:
    1. Improve PCIE-E compatibility

So it's normal that my wireless network adapter is now working much better.

Hi, I have a ASUS N550JK-DS71T laptop which has about half the download speed with wifi compared to a similar laptop (with a N-type wireless card) right next to it. So this issue is not due to ISP or router. Upload speed is fine. I used speedtest.net. Laptop has the INTEL AC 7260 wireless card...

So I just installed Windows 8 on my gaming rig. I gotta say, after being skeptical of this whole OS for a while, installing it fresh and trying it out shows just how useful (and FAST) it can be. The only thing about W8 that isn't fast is my ethernet adapter. When connected, downloads are slow,...
