Problems with 8.1 and internet connectivity

So I am reading here that quite a few people are having trouble with internet dropping out after the 8.1 update. Me too. Here's my story.

I updated two laptops (a Sony Vaio and an Asus) from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 after the update was made available this week. Both were working perfectly before the update. Now, both of them lose internet connectivity after about 10 minutes. Disconnect, reconnect, they work fine for another 10 minutes. Drops again, disconnect, reconnect, works another 10 minutes. The Asus even drops internet every 10 minutes on the Ethernet connection. I haven't tried Ethernet on the Sony.

I have two wireless routers in my house and it doesn't matter which router I connect to. Ten minutes of surfing the web, dropped connection, ....disconnect, reconnect, good for another 10 minutes.

For what it's worth, I have a Windows 7 laptop, ipad, iPhone, VOIP phone, all connected and all work just fine. My internet setup has been working fine for over a year since I connected everything as it is now. The only change is the update to 8.1 on two computers.

Both laptops have Atheros AR9285 wireless built in.

I have:

1) tried multiple drivers on each machine. no difference with 10.0.0.75, 10.0.0.260, 10.0.0.263
2) have adjusted the power profile settings to "maximum performance".....no change
3) tried static ip addresses....no difference than with "automatic" ip from dhcp

Ideas anyone? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the link. I watched the video and can't see anything he did that I haven't already done.

My problem seems different. My computer(s) both recognize the wireless card. Both connect and indicate "connected" and "internet access". However, after 10 minutes, I can try to navigate to a web page and I get the "can't load this page" error. Even then, the computer shows "connected" and "internet access". If I disconnect and reconnect, the page I was trying to go to immediately loads and everything is fine for 10 more minutes.

It's weird.

Many people are having this problem. There are lots of suggestions about updating router firmware, NIC drivers, whatever. None of that works. Somehow we need to get Microsoft's attention on this matter.

I worked my up from a virtual machine, to a slow 32-bit celeron and now two monitors on my XPS8100. Works great!

Suggest you study the YouTube video more closely, what he does certainly isn't normal or standard procedure but he doesn't make the changes that fixed the problem until the end of the video. The adjustments work but you just need to follow the directions in the video which are very specific, especially at the end.

I may to have to go and watch that video more closely so I could lay out the information here for you more clearly but it does work none the less and this is about the only fix for the problem with the Atheros AR9285, until a better driver comes out.

Calbear, your case is completely different with your Dell XPS 8100, in your case Windows 8 or 8.1 drivers were never created for your Dell so your best bet is to read about how others are managing to upgrade these systems. Seems to involve updating the bios, and there is a list of updated driver versions that should help.
