    Ethernet port not working

just noticed my Vaio ethernet port isn't working. it says the adaptor is working normally, but when I plug in an ethernet cable is says the cable is not plugged in. I tried it with two different cables that work elsewhere.

I wonder if the laptop ethernet card is faulty?

    Wireless is working fine.

Anyone got any ideas to try?

I only ever use it to hard connect the router during setup, so it could have been out of order even before my Win7 to 8.1 upgrade.

Probably so if you never bothered to install the LAN drivers after upgrading.

I have downloaded the win 8 drivers from the Yukon website, it hasn't helped.

I'd be interested in seeing the results of a system file scan using sfc /scannow command typed into an elevated command prompt.

I will try that when I can and let you know, thanks.

Otherwise I will have to buy a cheap lan to usb adaptor or something.

Lets check out the scan first, lots of problems with system files and component store corruption lately but not sure why.

Many people are having this problem. There are lots of suggestions about updating router firmware, NIC drivers, whatever. None of that works. Somehow we need to get Microsoft's attention on this matter.

well I connected the same AP router using the same ethernet cable to a different computer and that worked, so the problem is definitely in the Vaio, not the peripherals.

Actually, I've already fixed countless Windows 8 and 8.1 machines with router firmware updates and new drivers. It's probably best not to equate your particular problem with problems that others are having as each case is unique and different.

This is a new Op system so driver problems and other bugs are bound to occur, it happens every time.

Dakeb, if you want more help I'd need to know that model number of your vaio so I check the Sony vaio site for recent updates.

If you can connect using a wireless connection try visiting the Windows Update Center.
