Actually, I've already fixed countless Windows 8 and 8.1 machines with router firmware updates and new drivers. It's probably best not to equate your particular problem with problems that others are having as each case is unique and different.

This is a new Op system so driver problems and other bugs are bound to occur, it happens every time.
Countless machines.... since last Thursday? This is clearly a Win 8.1 problem and no one that has the "disconnect after some use" problem has reported a fix that works. Perhaps you can give and example for this exact problem "worked on Win 8, doesn't work on Win8.1.

Actually Windows 8.1 has been out for many weeks longer than you realize, TechNet subscribers had it weeks ago, and yes I've already fixed countless 8.1 machines with firmware updates, drivers etc. That's what I do here, I fix things.

I think in your case there may be a driver for your Broadcom NIC's, the problem is that Dell hasn't released one yet but other manufacture's have such a Lenovo so you might try the Dell forums for a solution.

Of course the release version of Win 8.1 is Exactly the same as the previews. I don't know how Microsoft could have messed up a simple hardware interface requiring new drivers for what is essentially a big service pack and there must be hundreds of different NIC's and drivers. I have 3-year old computer, it works really well on Win 8 but Dell has never "qualified it for Win 8" so I don't expect any help from them. However its probably a quick fix for Microsoft if they were willing to look into it.

Yes I would expect an updated driver from either Dell or Msoft very shortly although I agree, someone dropped the ball here big time. I did find a Lenovo Broadcom driver specifically for Windows 8.1 but not too sure if these Lenovo drivers will work on a Dell.

Maybe installing the Windows 7 driver in Windows 8.1 compatibility mode would help. Or you could try installing a Windows 8.1 certified PCE wired NIC into one of the PCE slots on your Dell XPS 8100.

Well the good news is my USB wireless adapter has worked well for 2 days now. I'm going to try a USB Ethernet adapter tomorrow.

It's a sad state of affairs that a 700 laptop with a 100 OS installed has to have cheap plasticy adaptor thingies occupying USB ports just to get the Network working.

It's just a matter of time before those new drivers for your Sony Vaio are released. If you can post the exact model number of the Sony or check the Sony site or check the Windows Update Center for updated drivers.

I'm not sure Sony will release new drivers. Apparently they aren't releasing drivers for the ALPS pointing device (aka touchpad or mouse) so they probably won't for the NIC.

I had to download ALPS drivers from gateway.
