I tried running dism restorehealth. The following output resulted:

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 6.3.9600.16384

    Error: 87
    The online/cleanup-image/restorehealth option is unknown.
For more information, refer to the help by running DISM.exe /?.

Ok what did the sfc scan say? The DISM results seem to indicate a problem with disk space but no doubt there are other problems here.

If you aren't passing these scans then there are some major problems with this system but you still have the option to refresh or reset the system.

I repeated the scf /scannow scan. This time I get the following result:
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
So it looks like I may be on the right track but I still have the problem. What is the next step?
Also, I noticed that there is now a drive on my computer called RECOVERY (D that wasn't there until very recently. It has a total of 25.6 GB with only 3GB left. I don't know if this is relevant or not but maybe it relates to the disk space problems mentioned in the scan earlier.

    Thanks.

I'm not sure about the RECOVERY folder although there should be a Windows.old folder there someplace which saves your stuff from the previous installation. I'm seeing many problem related to the upgrade and it's difficult to keep up with them.

Did you try running the DSIM repair command after sfc passed?

Yes. I don’t think my DISM program is working right. No matter what combination of options I type in (including all the ones you suggested), I get this error message:
Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 6.3.9600.16384
    Error:87
The online/[options here] option is unknown.
For more information, refer to the help by running DISM.exe /?.

I tried running DISM.exe /? as suggested, and the help screen included DISM.exe/Online/? as an example. So I typed it and got the same error message. Is something wrong with my DISM? What now? Thanks.

Also, there is no windows.old folder anywhere on the hard drive. I did a full search.

I can only suggest a reset, refresh or clean install at this point.

If you can't pass the DISM repair then you have major problems with this installation.

I did a system refresh. It solved the problem, and the problem came back when I reinstalled a freeware e-calendar program I had been using. Guess it's a side effect. It didn't have this effect on windows 7. Anyway, it looks like I will have to find another e-calendar program. I am not going to mark this thread as solved yet, but I will when I feel confident there is no other cause. Chev65, thanks a lot for your help. I really appreciate it.
