    Disable 'add printer' SNMP Scan

On all of our Windows 8.1 clients, every time a user tries to add a printer using the 'add a printer' wizard, it triggers alerts from our secure network devices indicating that someone's trying to log in to them with SNMP.

We need the failed logon notifications but it's incredibly annoying to get these all the time.

Any way to disable the SNMP scan when adding printers? Windows 7 didn't do this. Nor did windows 8 base as I recall.

    Thanks!

We, too, have noticed this happening, although it isn't specific to Windows 8. We have also observed, and can duplicate, this under Windows 7 SP1.
I'm looking in to how to disable this behavior.

Thanks for the info. If you find out how to do it, please let me know. Did you have to do something special to replicate it in windows 7?

I have found our problem and a solution that worked for us.
The problem was remedied with a simple GPO modification.
Under Computer Configuration/Policies/Administrative Templates/Printers/Add Printer wizard - Network Scan Page there is a "Number of TCP/IP printers" option. For some reason in our existing GPO this was set to 5 (not the default). In other words, a workstation using this policy would actually attempt to scan its local subnet via SNMP for the first 5 direct TCP/IP printers it could find for inclusion in the Add New Printers list. We hadn't noticed this because the TCP/IP printers were being listed at the bottom of the Select a Printer list. As it happens, we really didn't wan't users selecting printers this way anyway. Changing this setting to 0 took care of the problem.

Quick scan & Full scan in System Security
As a practice if a Quick scan detects something I fix it & then run a Full scan & a boot time scan. Avast just detected 1 infection. When the scan is complete I will fix it & do as I stated above. I really should run scans more often, as should everyone. 46771
