Wireless internet connection getting dropped constantly!

    Hi!

I just got a brand new Windows 8 laptop:
Samsung ATIV Book 8 15.6" TouchScreen Laptop 8GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive NP880Z5E-X01UB - Best Buy

My computer will constantly connect with my router with full internet connection, then drop it periodically. The connection is getting dropped as fast as every 2 minutes. It goes from full internet to "limited", and I can not connect to anything. If I disconnect and reconnect, it works again, but only for about another 2 minutes before failing. When troubleshooting through Windows, it fixes the problem, but again, disconnects in 2 minutes.

I have tried wireless tethering from my phone, and I have no problems at all. So something between my computer and router seems wrong.

My roommate also just got a brand new ASUS Windows 8 computer and is having no problem with our router. I have 4 other housemates (6 total people) connected to my router (all Windows 7), and none of them have problems either

What do you guys think the problem is? I have a kind of old Linksys WRTS46 router (seems to only have WPA, not WPA 2). I am right next to the router I did not have this problem with my old Windows 7 laptop. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Not my area of expertise but two things you can try:

    1. Switch to a high performance power plan to see if that fixes your issue.
    2. Check you wifi adapter in device manager (power management tab) and make sure the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is NOT checked. If neither work, then just put em' back to where they were and wait for the gurus. Good luck.

I had already tried option 2 with no luck. But your first suggestion, for now, seems to have fixed things! What setting(s) do you think are affecting this in my power plan?

Have you rebooted the router? I have had problems like this - one device has problems while others work fine - and pulling the plug on the router has fixed it.

I'm not so sure you typed in the model number of that old WRT series router correctly but with that ancient router you will need to update the firmware at the very least in order for it to work with Windows 8.

Honestly, that router is so outdated it's hardly worth the effort. I would go with a newer router that supports wireless N and WPA2.

Whoops, the router number is WRT54G version 2. Totally butchered that one haha. How do I update its firmware?

EDIT: I figured it out. I will report back later on how everything is working. Looks liek the router does has WPA2, I just had an ancient firmware.

If that doesn't work, you basically just recommend a new router?

I'll post a link to the latest firmware for this router, just select the version number for the correct firmware. This firmware should help with the connection problem although this router is using an old draft G so the wireless speeds will be maxed at 54Mbps.
