Delay with Wireless Network Adapter on my Desktop

I am using a Netgear WNDA4100 wireless adapter on my new Windows 8 desktop computer. I had previously been using the WNDA3100 and it worked flawlessly; however I found a refurbished WNDA4100 online for half the price.

Up until today, the WNDA4100 had not let me down. Every website I would type in would load right away. I decided to save some money and return the WNDA3100...but not before testing out which one worked better. So I uninstalled the driver for the 4100, reinstalled the 3100, and didn't see much difference in performance. Naturally, I returned the earlier, more expensive model and reinstalled the WNDA4100.

However, it does not seem to be working the same as it had up until today. When I try to load a page, it will have 2-5 seconds of request before actually loading anything (I use google chrome and what I mean is that I will see the light gray counterclockwise circle for a few seconds before seeing the fast/dark/clockwise circle, whereas for the past 2 weeks on this same wireless adapter I have barely ever seen the light gray circle for even 1/2 a second).

This is very frustrating for me because I have a new and powerful machine that now feels extremely slow...and I KNOW that this wireless adapter can perform much better than this. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers/utilities a couple times, I've unplugged the device and plugged it back in, and I've even tried other USB ports on my machine. Please help me!!

*Edit*
PLEASE NOTE
After the delay, the pages will load a lot slower than they used to...but they do load all the way after a while.

Sounds like a driver problem to me.

First try to install the latest driver software version 1.2.0.10 for the WNDA4100, this driver shows up under software at > WNDA4100

That is the driver I have been downloading and reinstalling. Like I said, it worked perfectly before, and I'm having this problem now..but I'm using the same driver

Ok just wanted to make sure. There were some problems with the earlier drivers but they have supposedly fixed that problem with this latest driver.

Can you please post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all from this machine?

Sorry guys I know this is almost 2 months later but I thought I'd just post here instead of start a new thread.

There have been some developments with my wifi problems. I am still using the Netgear WNDA4100 wireless adapter.

Since I've downloaded the Windows 8.1 update, the wifi will always connect automatically when computer is booted up or woken from sleep (before the update, I might have the "limited connection" symbol and have to troubleshoot problems or disconnect/reconnect the wireless adapter). So that's no longer an issue.

However, I still feel like my internet connection is nowhere near as fast as it should be. I still notice lag before pages load and they don't load as fast as they did when I was using a new wireless adapter. Still don't know if this is a problem with my PC settings, the adapter itself (it's refurbished), or if I just need a new router (have been using the same one for a few years now).

Any help is appreciated!

Try following the instructions to install the Netgear driver rather than the Windows driver and it should work better but not sure as I can't test this myself. It's the third post down.

As for the wireless speed, you need to go into the routers settings and make sure you are using the 802.11n Only setting not mixed, you might try using channel bonding as well along with WPA2 personal and AES encryption, or you could try connecting using the 5Ghz frequency but that works best if you are in the same room with the router.

I went into my wireless settings but could not find what you are talking about here..sorry I don't know much about routers.

I tried everything else you suggested but no dice :( The 5G connection was too slow and re-installing the driver didn't make a noticeable difference.

I reread the issue because I thought you were having the same problem as everyone else with this adaptor but apparently you are connected but it seems slow which is different problem.

5GHz will be slow unless you are in the same room with the router.

I'd have to see the read out from InSSIDer to help with the slow connection. :)

I have now downloaded and installed InSSIDer. What do you need to see from it? I could take a screenshot. Thanks.

Yes a screen shot would help me to see the network landscape in your area.

That's a screenshot of the networks tab. The Analyze tab tells me I have low signal strength and weak connection, and recommends me adding an access point. However the wifi desktop icon shows 5 bars.

The biggest problem I see here is some major channel overlap. You can see the overlap there on channel 1.

You will want to go into the routers settings and change the channel to 11 which is a clear channel for your area.

You will also want to turn off channel bonding because channel 5 is receiving some major overlap as well and it should work better using a single channel.

If you can post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all from this machine then I will be able to tell you the gateway IP for your router so you can get into it and make the adjustments.

Just a thought, make sure you have a good dns servers. Just had similar issue with a client and once we switched him to opendns his problem was solved. Google's dns servers also seem to do well.

How would I check what DNS server I have and if it works well?

You can access the routers settings at http://192.168.1.1 which is your routers default gateway.

You may need to look around for the wireless set up page. Once there change the channel to 11 and because you are showing a co channel try to turn off channel bonding which should show up as 20Mhz-40Mhz , you want only 20Mhz for now which is single channel mode. This is important because I'm seeing a big signal drop out with channel 5.

It's easy enough to add Google DNS IP address to the routers settings, just find where it says DNS and type in 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 although DNS doesn't have much to do with the problems I'm seeing with InSSIDer.

I switched to channel 11, thanks. Is there anything else channel bonding might be called? I looked through all the sections and could not find anything that seemed like channel bonding or even had 20Mhz or 40Mhz as values.

I don't know what kind of router you have so can't give exact directions, but just changing that channel may help.

Might want to check the DNS while you are there, it's usually on the wired connection set up page.
