I have now downloaded and installed InSSIDer. What do you need to see from it? I could take a screenshot. Thanks.
Yes a screen shot would help me to see the network landscape in your area.

That's a screenshot of the networks tab. The Analyze tab tells me I have low signal strength and weak connection, and recommends me adding an access point. However the wifi desktop icon shows 5 bars.

The biggest problem I see here is some major channel overlap. You can see the overlap there on channel 1.

You will want to go into the routers settings and change the channel to 11 which is a clear channel for your area.

You will also want to turn off channel bonding because channel 5 is receiving some major overlap as well and it should work better using a single channel.

If you can post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all from this machine then I will be able to tell you the gateway IP for your router so you can get into it and make the adjustments.

Just a thought, make sure you have a good dns servers. Just had similar issue with a client and once we switched him to opendns his problem was solved. Google's dns servers also seem to do well.

How would I check what DNS server I have and if it works well?

You can access the routers settings at http://192.168.1.1 which is your routers default gateway.

You may need to look around for the wireless set up page. Once there change the channel to 11 and because you are showing a co channel try to turn off channel bonding which should show up as 20Mhz-40Mhz , you want only 20Mhz for now which is single channel mode. This is important because I'm seeing a big signal drop out with channel 5.

It's easy enough to add Google DNS IP address to the routers settings, just find where it says DNS and type in 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 although DNS doesn't have much to do with the problems I'm seeing with InSSIDer.

I switched to channel 11, thanks. Is there anything else channel bonding might be called? I looked through all the sections and could not find anything that seemed like channel bonding or even had 20Mhz or 40Mhz as values.

I don't know what kind of router you have so can't give exact directions, but just changing that channel may help.

Might want to check the DNS while you are there, it's usually on the wired connection set up page.

Thanks, some noticeable speed increases. Also waiting for a new router in the mail, hopefully that helps too.
