I have a pretty good idea of what the problem might be, this is becoming a common problem with Windows 8 or 8.1, in fact I've already fixed this exact problem with the steps below.
First run the sfc /scannow command, use an elevated command prompt for this, use option 2 in the link below.

It's required to reboot the machine after the scan completes which can take awhile depending on the amount of file corruption. It might seem to stop for some time, just let it finish then reboot the machine.
The wireless adaptor may starting working again after this scan but the store corruption is still there.
After reboot open the elevated command prompt again and run the command > Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth it might mention that it's fixed something. Reboot again and run sfc /scannow again, it should come up clean this time.
This should fix the store corruption which caused the problem and the wireless NIC should now be working.
