Windows 8 PC as server. Extremely slow transfer to android

Hi I have setup a n54l hp micro server with windows 8 as my home server and shared a folder with password protection set to off (needed to enable guest account for this to work btw which seemed strange)

Now file transfer between my windows pcs is fast (30MB/s over wifi) but to my android phone and tablet the speed is horribly slow (30kb/s i.e. 1000x slower)

Before I used a readynas duo as my file server and my transfer speeds with my phone were about 0.5MB/s and on pc about 5/MB/s

I have tried different applications on my phone with no change in speed (currently using es file explorer)

Can anyone suggest anything to try and solve the problem?

This may work better without the server using the VPN set up in Windows 8.

From what I'm reading about android and Windows 8 you need to turn off the encryption or it can be problematic.

The link below explains what's required to turn off encryption on the Android device which may help with the slow connection problem. Third page from last, where I quoted directions to turn off encryption. :)

Hi there
just possibly a stupid question here but are you connecting via Blue tooth -- that is incredibly slow for data transfer - use Wi-Fi.

The encryption shouldn't really be an issue one way or the other --if you are using a recent modern smart phone the chances are the processor in it will be just as good (if not BETTER) than in your PC !!!!. Note also if the phone has an extra sd card as well as it's own memory the data transfer from those micro sd thingey's can be quite slow too - although should be faster than what you've reported.

I suspect it's probably Blue tooth. However the data encryption might as others have said be causing the problem. What happens if you connect the phone directly via say a USB cable. If data transfer is an issue still - then "Houston ---We have a problem !!!!.

Cheers

Hi guys thanks for your help but I don't think the suggested solutions are the problem. The connection is over wifi just as my laptops and I am not trying to remote onto the machine but am accessing the files from a shared folder.

To share the files across my network I go the the foler in file explorer right click and then choose properties/sharing/Share...

I then add guest and everyone read write and full control.

I then go to Network and sharing centre -> Change advanced sharing settings

and then under All Networks select "Turn off password-protected sharing"

Is there something else I could have missed? Seems crazy that file transfer can be 1000x slower just because of a different os. (also speed is the same to the android sd card or internal memory)

You really need to check those links I posted earlier. They show in detail how to set up Windows 8 as a VPN server for your android device and it shows how to turn off the encryption which is a known problem with Android.

The last link was from just two days ago showing the success of a Windows 7 user by turning off the encryption on the Android device which is a well known problem, and following the link to set up Windows 8 as a VPN server. So the problem is most likely with the micro server which isn't required or the encryption.

Hi I'm probably not understanding something but I thought vpn was for making connections across the internet? I am connecting to my server in my home network. Any of the settings seem to only affect connections made outside my network?

The only setting I can see to do with encryption on my network is under

Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings\All Networks\File sharing connetions

And here I can either set encryption to 128 bit or 40/56 bit but cannot disable. Is there something I am missing?

For some reason when I saw the micro server I assumed you would need VPN access but if this is just to access folders on the local network then there are tutorials that show how to do this locally on the LAN.

From the YouTube video, it looks like you create a standard account for the Android device on the Windows 8 machine and go from there, the micro server isn't required. You may have already done this set up procedure, the micro server may be the reason why the transfers are so slow.

Thanks for the link. It's pretty much how I setup my shared folder but to double check I created another share following the exact method in the video and unfortunately transfer speed is the same (25-35kb/s) I am so baffled by this problem. Doesn't make sense that speed can be perfectly fine on my computers but useless on my android devices. Also when I use es file explorer to download files from my dropbox account it downloads at roughly 200kb/s which isn't great seeing as I have 20mb broadband but it is still 10x the speed of transferring over lan.

Could this be a problem with my router maybe?

EDIT - don't think I've mentioned this but I have a dlna server (plex) running on the server and videos played on my android using plex work fine but if I try to play the same video by navigating to it using a file explorer it will take 3-5 seconds to play 1 second of video.
