How to setup internet connection over USB with smartphone?

Hey guys, quick question.

I have an iPhone 4 and it has the ability to share its 3G data connection over USB (or WiFi)

When I had Windows 7 and I put the option to share over USB, the minute I put the iPhone 4 in over USB, the connection would automatically be detected and used. But with Windows 8, I am forced to use the WiFi feature which is bad for my battery and speed and I wouldnt prefer this of course.

Does anyone know how to set up Windows 8 to use the internet connection over USB?

I was checking into setting my iPhone 5 up over the G4 connection, so I did a little research. The phone says to use it that way, you have to set it up as a Hotspot and then your cellular provider has to set up their end.

I do have to turn off the WiFi for the LTE to be active. But I don't really see anyplace to use the phone through the USB. All I have is the Data Storage. Did you have some utility in Windows 7 that made it possible to use the phone this way? Are you using the same OS version now as before?

If you give me the steps you took to set it up in Windows 7, I will try both OSes to see what might be different.

I dont think it should have anything to do with the provider seeing as I did it in Windows 7 just fine.

Steps to make it work in Windows 7:
- Turn USB hotspot on
- Plug in the USB to the iphone and into the laptop

Done. It autodetects and everything works...

2. Put my phone on it's USB cradle
3. IOS 7 asked me if I trusted this PC , press yes
4. Win 8 dinged as though recognising a new item.

the hotspot was then showing as 'Network : internet access' in my networks list.

It seems I do not have a plan with Verizon that allows hotspots to be used. So all I can suggest is to see if there is an update to any utility on the phone that controls the connections. There may be one for Windows 8, and Verizon published their update in May of this year to the utility used for phone hotspots.

Yes that is how I did it for Windows 7; except with no step 3, but it did come up as "Network."

I am Canada using the Rogers network. There was no update for it.

The differences you your Step 3 may be an indication of the problem. But since this is a USB device, maybe we should look a a USB problem.

Have you tried changing USB ports? Each port loads a driver for a specific device. Maybe the driver on one port is not functioning correctly.

In Device Manager, some of the USB Root Hubs may have an "Advanced" Tab in their properties dialog. It has the option to reset the Hub. I have seen situations where a device was not removed in the correct way (either using or not using Safe Removal) and the Hub stopped functioning correctly.

Do you know if the ports you have on your system are USB 3.0/2.0 or something similar? Are you using just the Windows 8 drivers for your system, and have you checked the manufacturer's website for any Windows 8 drivers?

I have tried all my ports; no luck, resetting does not help at all.

My system has 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 USB 3.0 port; they seem to behave exactly the same-- meaning, zero recognition of the iPhone as a network device (but it does charge the device and allow me to get into the device's flash storage and use it with iTunes, etc.)

I think there seems to be some kind of configuration thing I have to do with W8 as it just doesnt want to recognize the iPhone as a network device...
