I highly doubt it would be a driver issue for both however I cannot comment for your network adapter. Typically Windows 7 drivers are supported for Windows 8 but they aren't perfect.

    I use a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router model# WNDR3400

Yeah I've been reading a lot of other posts about Wi-Fi troubles after upgrading to Windows 8. I actually upgraded my router's firmware to the latest version last night. Did not resolve the issue.

At this point the main two things we're considering is the router and the wireless adapter, is that correct? Kinda sucks there are two variables, so it's hard to identify/resolve the problem. I could go out and buy a new wireless adapter (the one I'm using right now is borrowed), but that may not even resolve the issue. Are there any other factors that may be involved here?

Correct, after upgrading the firmware have you been able to test on any other Windows 8 machines via wireless?

If there was a driver available then that could help us narrow it down. I am certain that it is not an application at all so please feel free to enable the firewall again.

I'll see if I can get someone to review this and get their opinion on the situation

Yeah Windows firewall probably isn't the problem; I've turned it back on now.

Thanks for your help, Josh. I wish Windows 8 didn't make this so much harder than it should be hopefully someone knows what the problem is here.

No worries, normally this is caused by a software issue however your issue is definitely unique. You should receive a response within 24 hours. If not I will try and continue with this and look into other possible causes.

The mini USB adaptor is a bit of a relic there chief and driver support is dismal for that one. That is the most likely problem here.

I'd say the easy fix is to use a more up to date USB adaptor.

There are much faster wireless N versions and so inexpensive from Amazon.

Most people are unaware that by updating all of the older wireless G client/devices then you could also run the much faster 802.11n Only setting on the router, this is the only way to achieve true wireless n speeds.

Yes I'm planning on purchasing a new one anyway, but how can I be sure that the new adapter I purchase will be compatible with Windows 8? Sorry I don't know much about wireless adapters, but I did read that N Series ones are the fastest. Are you just suggesting I purchase a more recent model?

Guys, I bought a more up-to-date wireless adapter that says "supports windows 8" on the box. I installed it and have successfully connected to my wireless network!

I guess something about Windows 8 just wasn't compatible with the older wireless adapter..it's not that old so I don't know why. Windows 8 has been out long enough..I hope I won't be facing more incompatibility issues anytime soon!

Anyhow, thanks for all the help guys! Really meant a lot
