How to allow disk access to a winxp pc?

    Hello everyone.

I'm trying to allow my win xp desktop pc to be able to access the hard disk on my win 8 laptop.

I put them in the same workgroup and then map the laptop's disk on the desktop pc. I can now see the laptop's disk in "network drives" in the xp but when I try to open it, I get an error message that I am not allowed to access it.

So, back at windows 8, I go to my disk Properties, Security tab and try to Add permissions for the winxp pc, which is what I think I'm supposed to do to solve my problem. However, at the "Select Users or Groups" window, I click on Locations and the only thing that appears is the win8 laptop. Isn't the desktop pc supposed to be appearing over there as well? I can't add permissions for a pc that doesn't exist in Locations.

Can someone please tell me if I'm thinking this the right way and how to solve this problem?
    Thank you in advance

Back to the Security tab of the drive you need to access, it's best to set this up from the C:>Users folder, or which ever drive letter you have for the system drive.

When you get to the Advanced sharing setting you need to add "Everyone" to the access list then give it read/write access. Using the computer name won't work here as you would think. The link below shows more details about how to do this.

Thank you for the reply chev65

I tried what you said on the system drive itself at first. When I clicked OK though, I started getting error messages

    ''Error Applying Security

An error occurred while applying security information to:

    C:\hiberfil.sys
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process''
And the same for the files
    C:\swapfile.sys, C:\pagefile.sys

    Also
    ''Error Applying Security
    C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86)
    C:\Windows
    C:\
Failed to enumerate objects in the container. Access is denied.''

    and in the end
''Unable to save permission changes on diskname(C: ).

    Access is denied''

I then tried to do it in the Users folder. Over there, there was already an Everyone group. I added Allows to anything that wasn't ticked already, I got a bunch of error messages again, though the ticks stayed in the end... however, when I try to access the laptop's drive from my winxp pc, it still says I'm not allowed to

It sounds like previous settings may be contributing to the problem. You don't want to try and share through the C: drive itself, Windows really isn't set up for this. The error messages are typical because you are changing the permissions on all the subfolders as well.

Adding the correct permissions to the "Everyone" share at the C:>Users folder, usually works, you also need to allow for sharing on the Sharing tab Advanced settings as well, this is shown in the link I posted earlier.
