Impossibly Slow Wifi Speed, Brand New Computer.

Hi all.
I recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite C50-A02-V running Windows 8 Home Edition.

I've never really had the fastest internet, but its always been alright for what I used it for... untill i purchased this computer. Suffice it to say the internet is... a little below sub par.
Heres a speedtest...



My phone, My sisters Laptop running windows 7, even my old 2006 IBM running Linux all are getting speedtests with Download speeds of at least 5-6Mbps from the same router, with at least 5-6Mbps.
And yet here I am, brand new computer in hand, with memories of dialup floating through my head.

I've been on message boards trying to find an answer to this for hours. I've changed the Wireless settings to not turn off the Wifi. I've checked Toshiba's Website and downloaded the latest WLAN driver. I deleted literally every last ounce of bloatware from the computer when I got it, so I don't THINK that's an issue. There's no torrents or security running either.

Basicaly I have no idea what to do.

Now the weird thing is if I turn the computer on, and do a speedtest right away, I'm getting a fast Ping and a download of 5 Mbps instead of the 0.6...

Any Help or ideas on what to do?

Did you try an ethernet cable instead of wireless? If that works normally, read on...

I had a problem like this many years ago, it turned out to be something wrong with the drivers for the network card I was using. To fix it, go into device manager and find the entry for the wireless network adapter (eg "xyz wireless network adapter"). Right click on the adapter and select "remove". Reboot the machine. It should detect the adapter as new hardware and reinstall the drivers for the network hardware. Of course you may need to supply the drivers at this point if they are not available on the machine.

This is somewhat techy and if you are not a level 2 nerd you may want to get a qualified friend to help...

I have already uninstalled the driver via device manager, deleted the old driver, restarted, re-installed with the driver found on the Toshiba Website and restarted. No Avail.

I'm off to work now, but will try plugging computer into Ethernet later.

I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite as well. Not the same number, but I am having the exact same problem. When I plug the computer directly into the internet cable, it runs at 4-5 Mbps, but over wifi it is normally about 0.3-0.8 Mbps. When I start it up and run a speed test, it is faster.
So far, I have tried the following:
Uninstalling the wireless driver and reinstalling
Making sure I have the latest driver installed (I do)
Updating my router (which is also new) This seemed to make the internet run faster for a couple minutes, but then again it dropped back down
Downloading another driver from the Toshiba website. Unfortunately I am not a tech person and though I downloaded it, I was not able to use it.
Calling Toshiba support. The first time they had me remove the battery, put it back in, and then start the computer while holding the F2 button. I was able to reset something (don't really know what, but I did it by pushing F9) and then starting up the computer. It ran faster for a couple minutes.
I called Toshiba again today and they offered me a lovely service plan for only $150 (or $99 for the value, one-time plan) to remotely connect to my computer. Yeah....right.

So...if I figure it out I'll come back and post here what I did. Otherwise, I'm taking it back to the store. I still have two days left to return it.

You should first visit the Windows Update Center using a wired connection in order to install any important updates for your new system.

I would seriously think about removing every last bit of bloatware that was preinstalled on your machine.

I would certainly remove any type of those so called trial anti virus software's using the special tool designed for the job.

Starting up in safe mode with networking is one way to isolate the problem, if the problem is gone in safe mode you can be sure that something installed on the system is the cause of the problem.
