Windows 8 - Default Gateway Not Avail

I have seen similar threads but nothing there has worked... (The option to turn the wifi off to save power is unchecked.)

I just got a new laptop (Samsung Ativ 7) and it worked great for a week on the router I have at home. I just moved into university housing and the wifi seemed to work for about a day, but since then (about 3 days now) it continuously disconnects from the internet. Like every 30 seconds... It's bad. If I'm lucky I'll get a few minutes, though strangely the problem seems to be getting worse each day and my time online seems to be getting shorter each day.

When I run the troubleshooter, it says the default gateway is not available and "fixes" the problem, which lasts for a few seconds/minutes before it reverts. Every now and then the problem will be "Wi-Fi doesn't have a valid IP configuration." That problem gets "fixed" and the internet never works, instead I have to trouble shoot again to see the gateway one, then I get a little bit of wifi. Lately I have to run troubleshooter multiple times before I get any results.

I think I'm having DNS issues, but what the cause or the solution is, I do not know... The lease is always listed for about 5 minutes (though I don't always make it that far) and when I try to connect the college VPN service, it says "Limited Access - DNS Failure."

My IPConfig info is below. Please let me know if I can do anything else to help

Your IP configuration looks fine. Your DNS servers may be the issue but first can I ask, when you get disconnected what happens to the network icon in the system tray? Does it have a Warning symbol next to it? Or do you get completely disconnected?

Lastly, do you know roughly how many people are using the network? And for testing purposes only, can you try to temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and firewall and see if you get dropped out at all?

Many Thanks,
Josh

I get the warning message when I'm booted - the little exclamation mark thing. Turning off firewall (Windows) and antivirus (Avast) did nothing to help. I do not know how many people are on the network, but it works just fine with my old computer and cell phone. It's in a major university that would certainly have enough capacity for the area, though... Any other tests I can run or anything I can try? Does the "media offline" stuff concern you?

Hmmm, the media offline shouldn't be related to this issue. When you get booted can you open a command prompt and type the following:

Code:
ping www.google.com

Press enter and let the ping complete. Once done please then type the following:

Code:
ping 173.194.41.115

Press enter and let the ping complete. Once all are done please upload your results so that we can see if DNS is a potential cause.

I restarted, and as soon as the computer booted I typed those things. Results are below:

1st) "request timed out" 4 times in a row. Packets sent = 4, received =0, lost =4 (100% loss)
2nd) "request timed out" 4 times in a row. Packets sent = 4, received =0, lost =4 (100% loss)

But the strange thing is that it shows me connected to the internet, Avast! updated, AND I can load web pages... Weird.

I have a hunch that some third party application on your machine is causing this. Since the issue is linked only with this machine.

Can you boot your machine into safe mode with networking and test connectivity.

Follow this tutorial (OPTION THREE ONLY) - http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2757-safe-mode-start-windows-8-a.html

Note   Note
Please replace all references of 'Safe Mode' with 'Safe Mode with Networking'

Please post back your results and then we can troubleshoot from there

Many Thanks,
Josh :)

I couldn't get F8 to work, so I did I rebooted from the MSConfig box - checking to go into safe + network mode. The internet did not connect though. Is it possible I'm not in network mode? I told it to reboot in safe and I checked the box that says "network" right below it. Any other way to get F8 to work better maybe?

Ok now it seems to work (still got there through msconfig), but both ping requests are still timing out. Strangely enough, I can also still load a webpage like ESPN even though I'm timing out the pings

My guess is that your Uni is blocking ICMP requests out. Did you ever get disconnected while in Safe Mode?

The connection still drops, even in safemode... On my old computer (too big to be portable, but I brought it anyway for dorm stuff) I was able to ping a few days ago. Today I can't though for some reason, but it did work at one point while the windows 8 machine was unable to. No problems at all on the windows 7 machine, but windows 8 is still having issues even with safemode...

I am hoping this is then a driver issue and not something that would require a reinstallation. :(

What is the make/model of your machine so I can try an appropriate driver for you to try?

Samsung Ativ 7. It's the Series 7 but I think they renamed it... NP740U3E-K01UB if that helps... And thanks for all the help here, I really appreciate it

With only certain web sites loading I might think about doing some virus scans with Malware Bytes.

Possibly try scanning with the sfc/scannow command and see if it finds any problems.

These only certain website loading type problems can be difficult to track down.

Maybe even flush the DNS, reset TCP/ip, reset winsock etc. Resetting IE to defaults might also help >Internet Options>Advanced tab>Reset button. It might also help or turn off proxy settings in IE, Connections tab>LAN button.

Thanks for pm Josh, my two cents. :geek:

It isn't just a few websites, it's every website that won't load. But only after the connection cuts out, which can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. I ran the sfc/scannow and it found corrupt files which it claims were repaired, but when I try to open the log file it tells me access is denied. But here's the good news - I ran the file you attached and after restart, my computer is able to ping google! Average time of 7ms. TTL=54. I hope we got this thing figured out! I'll post back and let you know if there are any more problems when I have time to actually play around with the computer over the next few days. But if we got it, thank you both so much!

SFC, fixed something which is usually a system file, so that could have been part of the problem.

The IP reset file fixed all problems related to the network stack, there could have been a problem with both.

Sounds like it was a "good guess" on my part either way, or maybe an educated guess is more accurate. :geek:

So far so good except for 1 little thing... I had the internet disconnect and another "gateway default" error popped up. I fixed it with troubleshooter and no help. (I could once again load sites, but not ping google.) But then when I logged on through the VPN, the pinging miraculously worked. Any idea what that's about? I don't think I should need to have a VPN to have internet access (my other computer does not require it) but so far it's what makes the internet work for me... Could there still be another slight problem? Now I just want to see if I still get the gateway error while the VPN is connected. May take a few days to see that but I'll be back to let you know either way

actually, and this may help... The computer that has never had any problems shows me 2 connections when I have the VPN turned on. University Internet shows as "Internet Access" and "Network 2" (which I believe is the VPN connection) shows as "Internet access." On the computer we are currently troubleshooting, only the Network 2 shows "Internet access." The other university connection shows "No internet access." So somehow the VPN is getting around whatever is blocking the main connection? And it's making it's own connection aside from relying entirely on the wireless being broadcast in my residence?

As said before it is most likely an access list blocking ICMP traffic whereas the VPN connection's LAN allows it. Can the computer that doesn't have the issue ping google? When the VPN connection is disconnected.

We can't really help with any VPN connections since it is not our's or your's network and for issues regarding that you would need to talk to the network Admin.
