VPN knocking out internet access in Windows RT

Hello all,

I am aware that similar questions to this have been posted before, but my case seems more extreme.

When I connect to my VPN (which works for other devices), my wifi status changes to limited, and very few things work which require an internet connection. For example I can use google to make a search, and I can see the search results, but I cannot open any other addresses or click on search results... This makes it seem to me like a DNS issue, but regardless of the DNS settings I select I cannot make any progress.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Michael

There is a long thread on the lack of support for VPN's with surface RT, it's 14 pages long but maybe you will find an answer there.

VPN Client Support - Microsoft Community

The complaint you have is fairly typical from what I have read in the link below " When I connect to the VPN in surface tablet ,my network connection be limited… why…!? help me…> Your connection can be limited when using VPN, it just all depends on which service you're using as a VPN,

Although these directions to set up a VPN using the point to point tunneling protocol may be helpful.

That thread seems to deal with preconfigured VPNs from providers, my vpn is on my own network running pptpd software on a raspberry pi...

tracert.PNG

If it makes any difference to anything I can get a successful tracer result to all the addresses I have tried, showing that there is a connection present...

The set up for a vendor specific VPN would be rather complicated unless you have a vendor specific App for this. Not sure what you mean by your own VPN and raspberry pi.

Lots of complaints about the surface RT lack of VPN support.

Hello chev65,

I set up my vpn server according to this article:

Unvexed: Stuff that Works: How to set up a real, encrypted VPN through your Raspberry Pi

The problem seems very strange, the VPN works on my iphone, and partially works on the surface, I can navigate to google, and to youtube and to ebay, but actually using any of these sites does not seem to work.

As I said earlier I can tracert successfully to all the addresses I have tried using the VPN

Mike

I did read something about having to modify the IP tables when using PPTPD, it's in the comment section.

You might have better luck setting this all up with Hamachi logmein after updating the pi.

I'm not familiar with Hamachi, is it an alternative to PPTPD which I can install on the RPi?
