Windows 8 on both Laptop and Desktop have internet problem

At first my laptop was having this issue, but I assumed it was because of my school's authentication method to get internet. It was until my desktop starting having issues that I started to think anything of it.

So the issue for both is typically when turning on the computer / coming from sleep the network won't initialize. It just sits there with the ! in front and won't let me connect to the internet. It is only if I restart will it work, and that is only sometimes. The troubleshooter is absolutely useless. I've tried restarting some services thinking that would kick it out of it's issue but with no avail.

Obviously I can't replicate this problem easily but I'll try to update the thread as much as possible. Thanks!

So it happened again upon starting my desktop. I got some pictures. It's worth noting that Windows never says my computer is offline when logging in, it just goes right to the Start Screen. I was also playing around trying to manually set an IP address but whenever I tried setting the default gateway it always resorted back to x.x.x.x (nothing in the fields) no matter what I did. I could never get it to stick.

It is also weird that there was about 3GB of outgoing and 1.5GB incoming when the adapter has only been on for 1 minute and 6 seconds. Upon gaining a connection they reset back to zero.

Did your service provider assign you to a single dedicated IP address? If not, why are you trying to do that? It won't fix your issue. Most people do not have a dedicated IP address as this usually costs extra (if your ISP even offers that service). So, do you have DHCP enabled? The is my last post for the night so I won't be responding anytime soon but maybe someone else will chime in to help you. Good luck.

If both your laptop and desktop are having the same issue the common denominator is either the router or the ISP modem so look there first for a possible solution. And please take anything into consideration that might have triggered this issue (ie, changes to the router and check modem logs for firmware updates directly applied by your ISP if applicable).

The one thing I've done is restored my router to factory settings, but DHCP is still enabled. I don't think it is an issue with my router, as the same issue is happening on my laptop at my college's network. Exact same thing, always requiring a restart to fix.

I thought you were using your laptop and desktop through the "same" router. If not, my assumptions and recommendation are obviously not applicable so good luck and hang in there for some additional assistance.

You will want DHCP internally to hand out private IP addresses to your devices. What JustATest was referring to was if your ISP was running DHCP and you won't be able to find that out from your local computers statistics however I doubt that is the issue, especially when it has occurred on different networks

Firstly can you ensure that your device is set to not go to sleep upon hibernation as this can cause some issues. To do so please download and open the attached ZIP folder and follow the steps inside

If that does not resolve you problem can you please boot your machine in Safe Mode with Networking and see if the same issue occurs? This will determine if there is a third party application causing this issue. (OPTION THREE ONLY) - Safe Mode - Start Windows 8 in

    Note   Note
Replace all references of 'Safe Mode' with 'Safe Mode with Networking'

    Many Thanks,
    Josh!
