Download Speeds Slow with New Upgrade

I recently upgraded to Windows 8, but since my download speeds have been very low. I pay for 2mb, but I'm getting about 100-500 kb/s when I download things on, say, Steam. I've done speed tsts from speedtest.net and it says I'm getting over 2mb/s download speeds, but I'm not seeing this in my actual downloads. Any help is appreciated.

How big is the file that you are downloading?

Mbps (Mega Bits per Second) is not the same as MB/s (Mega Bytes per Second)

Compared to other peoples download rates that is average for your connection. As a test, does the same speed apply to other machines or devices on the network?

Josh :)

After some math your connection would be on par with what you are paying;

2000 Kbps / 8 = 250 KB/s

information   Information
bit * 8 = Byte

Byte * 1024 = Kilobyte

Kilobyte * 1024 = Megabyte

For example I have a 10Mbps DSL connection and have a transfer rate of about 1-1.3MB/s

10 / 8 = 1.25 - (My transfer rate)

/ = Divide

* = Multiply

Hope This Helps,
Josh :)

Just because you are getting a 2MB download test result from speedtest.net does not insure that you will get that download speed from every server (eg, website) you visit. Did you ever visit a website and wonder why it loads so slow but other sites seem to load more quickly? So, if a server is especially busy (eg with others doing simultaneous downloads and/or just tons of browser access activity), your download speeds can be dramatically decreased by the served load alone.

I' m getting low download speeds around 100 kilobytes a second, and am paying for ~3 megabytes (30 mb/s). This speed is constant and never gets remotely close to what I am paying for, and is only happening on my now windows 8 PC, which had no troubles before.

Steam is a specifc server that could be slow due to a high volume of traffic.

I've done speed tsts from speedtest.net and it says I'm getting over 2mb/s download speeds

This confirms you are getting the service you are paying for under optimum conditions.
(The download speeds will vary based on the target server's ability to respond)

I'm not seeing this in my actual downloads. (2mb implied)

Again, your actual download speed will vary based on the server's ability to respond. Maybe steam has just gotten busier!

In summary, I can make no association between Windows 8 and you download speeds unless your router (if used) has Win 8 issues. Good luck in getting your issue fixed.

Hey, its not just Steam. I was just using Steam as an example. Other things I have downloaded that took forever: Google Chrome (took about 15 minutes) and Java 7 (took about 30 minutes) However, as I am speaking my download speeds have jumped up to a respectable 1.9mb/s downloading Skyrim, so I really am not sure. You might be right, and perhaps its not related to windows 8.

OK then, just for a test, we need to find a server that is guaranteed to ensure a maximum download speed test for you. So here is one that I guarantee will reveal you maximum download speed:

Windows 8.1 Preview ISO files - Microsoft Windows

Updated to remove an inaccurate statement. I have no idea what I was thinking. Just do the test please.
