    No valid IP configuration

    Hi,

I just bought a Samsung Ativ today. I got home, turned it on and tried to connect to my wireless, however I get the error message identified in the title, along with the network settings saying that it is an 'unidentified network'. I tried doing the netsh commands in the cmd prompt, I uninstalled Norton AV, nothing seems to work. An ipconfig/all in cmd showed that DHCP is enabled and I've got a subnet mask but no default gateway. I'd copy it here but I can't heh.

    Help would be greatly appreciated!

edit* Here's an ipconfig/all... imgur: the simple image sharer, sorry in advance to your neck!

169.254.x.x is an IPv4 Auto configuration address assigned when a machine cannot find or receives and invalid address from the DHCP server.

Does this happen when you plug your machine in via ethernet?

Also does this affect other machines on the network, if so what OS do they run? It could be a driver issue or a software issue regarding your router

Are there any other Windows 8 computers on the network?

Hi Josh, I've not used ethernet on any computer in about 4 years. They all connect to the same wireless network. This laptop doesn't have an ethernet port anyway, being an ultrabook. This is the only Windows 8 computer. What do you suggest I do? Thanks for the speedy reply.

In that case as a testing measure can you boot your machine in safe mode with networking and tell me if the same issue occurs

To boot your machine into safe mode with network follow this tutorial (OPTION THREE ONLY) - Safe Mode - Start Windows 8 in

Please replace all references of Safe mode with Safe Mode With Networking

Since this is a new machine I doubt this will make a difference however it is still a possibility a third party application is causing the issue.

Can you tell me the make/model of your router and the exact make/model of your machine so I can find the most appropriate driver available as this can be an issue

    Many Thanks,
    Josh!

    Hey,

It's a Samsung NP740u3e laptop. I got 'limited connectivity' in safe mode with networking, but I couldn't get internet access at all. The modem/router is an OPEN iConnect 625W.

Unfortunately I was unable to find any firmware update for your router due to it's age and it being obsolete. The only other possible problem is with the driver of your laptop. Due to Samsung's way of downloading drivers you need to download and install the SW Update and then install the drivers that way.

Please download and install from this link - http://orcaservice.samsungmobile.com/SWUpdate.aspx

Once done, search for your model and download the Wireless card and LAN drivers

Reboot your machine and then test. If this fails then I do not know what else to suggest other than using a static IP address which will work fine for your network however if you wish to connect to another network then you will need to change your machines settings to pick up a DHCP server. Then if you wish to connect to your network you would then have to enter the static IP address.

If a static IP address is something you wish to do then please open a command prompt on a machine that is successfully connected to the network and type the following:

    Code:
    ipconfig /all
This will present some information. If you can please either copy and paste the information here or upload a screenshot and from this I can propose a static IP address that should work

Tried power cycling your router and modem? Remove the power from both for at least 60 seconds. Go ahead and battery pull your laptop, too. Power up the modem first, then the router. Another command is ipconfig /release then ipconfig/renew. Can other devices pull an address from your router? Phones, tablets other laptops?

It said I can't perform the ipconfig commands because 'the media is disconnected'. All other computers work fine with the wireless. Power cycling did nothing.

Thank god, finally fixed it, or so it appears. I had to add a bunch of networky sounding names to the windows firewall exception list.

Thanks heaps for the help lads!

Ahh, I am glad your problem is solved! I must admit I did not suspect the firewall to be the issue since they should allow DHCP but apparently not @_

    Thanks for reporting back,
    Josh!
