No valid IP configuration

So it turns out that the firewall makes it work, but it still drops out every 5 or 10 minutes, an it Ives a gateway error. I changed he power management of be adaptor to always on which makes it last slightly longer but it still drops out, any ideas?

What do you mean by drop out? The connection drops out?

Does this happen on a different network? Possibly a friend/relatives or a public wi-fi?

Yeah the connection drops out and I get a default gateway can't be reached message. Doing the diagnostic test fixes this however. I rang my local ISP support and they were stumped, said maybe to give Samsung a ring, we tried switching the router from Mixed to G, that didn't help. I'm contemplating rolling back to Windows 7 and seeing if that will fix it, is that a good idea? Any other suggestions?

Going to try a clean slate on Windows 8 go back to default settings, will see if this does anything.

Have you tried changing the wireless channel on your router? Some channels become congested and therefore cause drop outs.

Try changing the channel to either 1, 6 or 11 and see if it drops out

Windows 7 shouldn't make any difference if this is a channel related issue.

I spoke to my ISP guy on the phone, he recommended that, it was already on channel 6, he said that was fine.

Fresh restart did nothing, and I'm still getting the standard default gateway unavailable, but this is with Norton AV turned on.

Try changing to Channel 1 or 11

If a neighbor's router is also broadcasting on channel 6 then your signal may get cancelled out therefore causing a drop out

I'd remove Norton as can cause issues particularly with your firewall as seen with your invalid IP configuration. This is looking as an issue with your wireless card rather than the router however I cannot be certain.

Are you able to try on another wireless network? Friends or relatives? Maybe a public Wi-Fi network? Does the connection still drop out?

If so then this is either a driver problem at which you can either find an updated driver to see if that fixes the problem or downgrade to windows 7 to see if the Windows 7 driver resolves the incompatibility. If the new driver doesn't work then I cannot suggest anything but a new wireless card... Seeing as this is a new machine I would see if you can get a replacement since this one could be faulty.

If it doesn't drop out on another wireless network then we are looking at an issue with your router. At which all I can suggest is reset the router back to factory settings and hope that resolves the issue. If not then try to change the authentication method to WPA2 since Windows 8 has compatibility issues with WEP. If that still doesn't work then I would try to find an updated firmware for your router as older firmware may not be compatible with Windows 8. Last resort would be to purchase a new wireless router.

Cool, I'll get rid of Norton. Will check on another network soon, don't have any around me at the moment unfortunately. The adaptor is already updated to the latest drivers, but I might try rolling back. Thanks for spending so much time with me on this Josh, worst comes to worst I'll just take it in to a proper computer repairer and see what magic they can come up with!
