wifi doesn't have a valid ip configuration (Limited)

    Hi,

I have a relatively new HP Envy (H8-1485ea), with no modifications made, running windows 8. I have had the been using it with a wired connection at university with no problems and on return home connected wirelessly. Initially I encountered no issues, however after about 2 days the status of the connection went to limited and has remained that way since.

On running the windows troubleshooter it stated that the "wifi doesn't have a valid ip configuration".

I searched this forum and found the suggestion to run the commands which resolved similar problems:
    netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset rest.log hit

However as shown in the attached image for the second command resetting failed. I am not sure if this is where I am going wrong or if there is another issue.

I have also attached my ip configuration.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem would be much appreciated, Thanks.

Do you have anything else connecting to the router that actually works (either wired or wirelessly)?
Have you tried power cycling the modem and the router?
Have you tried an ipconfig /release and then an ipconfig /renew after power cycling both?

    Thank you for your reply.
Yes sorry, I forgot to mention that there are several laptops, a desktop comp, an xbox and other devices connected to the router wirelessly and a desktop which is wired all of which are not experiencing issues. I have a Belkin modem router, which I have tried power cycling. I have not tried the third step however, I will try this and update with the result.

    Thanks

I tried the command ipconfig/release, when I performed it the response was:

"No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection* 11 while it has its media disconnected.
An error occurred while releasing interface WiFi : An address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint.
No operation can be performed on Ethernet while it has its media disconnected."

I am not entirely sure what this means.

It means you haven't established an association between your laptop and your router yet. Do you have wi-fi protected setup enabled on your router? If so, that could certainly be an issue. Now, how do you add your non-wps device to the protected network? I'm not exactly sure but you could check your router settings and see if you have WPS enabled and see if there is a WPS button on the front of your router? If so, I remember reading somewhere about how to turn on your laptop wifi, then push that button, and then somehow your laptop gets added to the protected network. Anyway, the easiest thing to do would be disable it and see if you can now access the network. I don't have such an option and that is why I don't know much about it. Do some research and testing. Let us know.

Your IP configuration shows an Autoconfiguration IPv4 address (169.254.x.x) this address is generated if it cannot get a DHCP response from the router.

I could suggest an appropriate IP configuration to manually enter however I will need the ipconfig /all of another machine with a working internet connection.

    Many Thanks,
    Josh

Ok, thank you. Yes I have WPS enabled on my router, and I connect to the router by using a network key for all devices. I believe there is the ability to use push button configuration, and I do have WPS button on the front of my router, but have never used it. I will have a play around and see if disabling WPS enables me to connect. The computer I am having the issues on is a desktop not a laptop, so I don't know if that makes any difference.

    Thanks

Holy mackeral? The issue is with a desktop? How did I miss that? Sorry if you made that perfectly clear. That's a whole different ballgame. Are you trying to use both connections on the desktop (LAN and Wifi)?
