Yes, I did try it. I get the same message. Frustrating, to say the least...

I think it is a driver re-install time. Could you please uninstall your Atheros wireless card from device manager and then download and install the following drivers - https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3xO...it?usp=sharing

Please extract the folder to a location and then run setup.exe

Upon successful install please restart the machine and then try again.

Yes, I did try rebooting the router (did it again this time too), but I can't connect. Frustrating, to say the least...

LE: Oops, sorry for the double post... I think this is getting too frustrating... haha!

The only thing I can possibly suggest now is to reset your router to factory default settings and try connectivity. Please remember that any changes made to the router (passwords, wireless channels, dns servers... etc) will be reset to default. After some research it would appear a few people have had the same problem with you and it may have something to do with the encryption method and Windows 8 poor compatibility

Will try to reset the router later today (not likely though) or tomorrow (very likely). Right now I haven't got too much spare time, as I am busy applying for student finance in the UK (I know, I'm late, haha!). But I will keep you updated tomorrow and tell you how it went.

PS: I have a question though. What is it more likely to be the cause of it? My laptop, the router or the OS itself?

No Problem, I am not entirely sure however I feel that your laptops wireless card may have something to do with it

It seems like a firmware update on the router is in order. It should work with WPA2 security and AES encryption. The only possible problem I see here is with the router not being compatible or the settings aren't correct. My two cents for what it's worth.

I even found the Op's post repeated on another forum.

Finally solved it! I followed your guys advices and it worked! Did a firmware upgrade and then a factory reset and not change anything in my modem's Wireless settings (I attached a print screen with those settings and erased the last 4 characters in the KEY 1 tab).

I'm really happy right now because I'm using my laptop to send this message wirelessly via my router. Haha!

Thanks @JustATes, @Shadowjk, @Strollin, @Chev65. All of you guys did a great job!
