Dear All,

I have a query--apart from the Homegroup option..is there any other way via which files can be shared between my Win 7 32-bit laptop & Win 8 64-bit desktop?

I am looking for something like-- upon clicking the PC name in the explorer, a window prompting for password will pop up and then upon entering correct password (may be the PC login password), the shared folders will be accessible?

Am sure Homegroup is the easiest solution out there. But I would like to know the other way too.

Thanks,
Troy.

@Josh & Shawn>> thanks a lot for the resolution guys.

Forgive my noobness but one query-- whatever computer joins the homegroup, they will be visible in the Windows explorer, right? I mean no machine which has joined my homegroup can stay hidden?

@Shawn>> Is there some kind of network monitoring software which I can install in my Laptop (where I have the shared folders)..so that when I try to copy data from there via my desktop...a notification will be shown in the Laptop indicating that some User has connected to it and accessing data? Please advise.

Hello Troy,

I don't know of one, but you might post that as a new thread in Network & Sharing to see if someone may know of something for that.

Unless the share accessed appears in Event Viewer, I am not sure whether you are able to accomplish such task without SNMP which in order to use without proper network equipment will require Windows Server (Essentials, Datacentre or Standard) to receive the echos and create traps or a third party application to be installed on a workstation. Please be advised that the later could have radical performance impacts.

Just my input based on networking monitoring tools I use ;)

PRTG is the best I use for my cisco devices however I have not tried on workstations and unless there is a 'plugin' the only way of finding such information would be to filter traffic so that only packets flowing to the IP address of your machine are monitored. This will include broadcasts (ARP) from local machines as well as internet browsing packets that you make when browsing the internet so it may not be accurate. - PRTG Network Monitor - intuitive network monitoring software

Just my two cents,

Josh :)
