I have a simple LAN with two PC's --a Win7 and a Win8.
- The Win8 machine can see and communicate normally with the Win7.
- The Win7 can ping the Win8 but can't see it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

On the Windows 8 machine, you might want to go to the Network and Sharing Center, then check the Advanced Sharing settings to make sure that Network Discovery and File and Printer sharing are both enabled. Let me add the picture of the All Networks settings here in case anyone else gets confused by all these settings. Both of these settings require adjustments, two layers for the same thing.

Thanks, guys. Chev65, I checked the settings -- they're correct. Jimbo, I tried the suggestion in the link (had to use the regedit method described as my Win8 is apparently the basic version with no Local Security Policy option), but still without success.

The attached shows what I get when I try to access the Win8 machine (FKLAPTOP). Per my original post, I can ping FKLAPTOP, and FKLAPTOP accesses everyone with no problem. I've also double-checked that "Everyone" in Security is allowed full control of the C drive and that Sharing is enabled for "Everyone".

I'd appreciate any other suggestions. Thanks again!

Are both machines in the same Workgroup? Using the same default Workgroup name on both machines etc.

Do you have a third party anti virus installed on these machines?

Can you post the ipconfig/all from both of these machines?

1) Both machines are on the same Workgroup (and the Win8 computer communicates flawlessly with the Win7 machine). 2) Avast is running on the Win 7; AVG on the Win8. (Both are the free versions.) 3) The ipconfigs are attached. Thanks again.

The ipconfig's look fine. I'd have to place the blame on one of the AV's without any hesitation. I'm not seeing anything else here that could possibly be causing a problem like this.

I would either configure these A/V's to work with Windows or I would uninstall them using the special uninstall tool for both of them and go with Windows Defender on both machines.

Thanks again for the quick reply. I'm not sure what you mean by "...configure these A/V's to work with Windows...". Could you explain? Also, for the Win7 machine, I understand that Windows Defender pre-8 is anti-malware only, not anti-virus. Don't I still need an anti-virus app on that computer?

With the trial versions you should simply uninstall them using the tool, you can find the tools by searching for them. Uninstalling them is the only way to go here.

Sometimes they can be configured to work properly but I surely don't know how to configure every A/V.

I removed AVG (with their removal tool) and activated Windows Defender. No change, so I guess that lets the A/V off the hook. Any other ideas? Should I try over at sevenforums?

Hi there.

Another issue -- you usually need a User ID and PASSWORD on BOTH machines to see and share folders / directories. Test by using the same User id and password on both machines --you can change these again afterwards.

Ensure also that the network / sharing center (Control panel) allows the computer(s) to be visible to other ones in the network. I'd also switch off the HOME NETWORK -- you don't need the machines to be joined via a home network.

Cheers
jimbo

Something doesn't seem right here, and the A/V on the Win7 machine can also create this type of problem, and the trial versions seem to create problems on a continual basis around here.

Are you certain that both machines are using the same Workgroup name? It's very uncommon for a machine in a standard workgroup to simply not show up.

Can you try to set up a Homegroup between these machines because the Workgroup functions are independent from the Homegroup.

Well, Jimbo, your last post steered me in the right direction. I went to Network and Sharing Center/Advanced Sharing Settings, and it automatically opened the Private (current profile) dropdown, with network discovery "on", as expected. Then I noticed another dropdown at the bottom of the page, for All Networks (which I'd never opened before, naively thinking that settings for Private networks -- the only type that I use -- took care of everything for me). Sure enough, in All Networks, password protection (which I don't need or use at home) was turned on. As I turned it off, I'm sure I heard Bill Gates laugh and say, "Gottcha, sucker!".
A happy ending, thanks to your persistence, Jimbo!

I sent you to the Advanced settings on the first post? I edited by also putting a picture of the All Networks Settings in case anyone else gets confused. They appear nearly the same as the Private network settings.

Password protected sharing, either on or off will not keep you from seeing a machine on the network. That is controlled by the Network Discovery settings in the Private and All Networks settings.

I believe the problem was that the settings for "All Networks" wasn't set up correctly, the same settings are required there as well which I mentioned in my first post, Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing are the ones that required turning on.

You also don't need to use a password in order to see or connect to other machines on the network. You only need a password for remote desktop to function.

In fact Jimbo didn't send you to the Advanced settings at all, he only mentioned that it might work better if you set up a user password on each machine.

I agree that the advanced network settings are confusing to say the least, there are multiple layers of settings there, Private network, then Guest or Public, then all networks, I just assumed you checked those as well when I posted the picture of the settings.
