Can ping but not see a Win8 machine

    I have a simple LAN with two PC's --a Win7 and a Win8.
    - The Win8 machine can see and communicate normally with the Win7.
    - The Win7 can ping the Win8 but can't see it.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

On the Windows 8 machine, you might want to go to the Network and Sharing Center, then check the Advanced Sharing settings to make sure that Network Discovery and File and Printer sharing are both enabled. Let me add the picture of the All Networks settings here in case anyone else gets confused by all these settings. Both of these settings require adjustments, two layers for the same thing.

    Hi there
There was a post about this a while ago -- you need to set the W7 Network connections differently in some cases.

Follow the link on this thread -- solution by CHEV65 seems to work in a lot of cases. (Ignore the title of the thread --it fixed both XP and Win7 computers on the network)

Thanks, guys. Chev65, I checked the settings -- they're correct. Jimbo, I tried the suggestion in the link (had to use the regedit method described as my Win8 is apparently the basic version with no Local Security Policy option), but still without success.

The attached shows what I get when I try to access the Win8 machine (FKLAPTOP). Per my original post, I can ping FKLAPTOP, and FKLAPTOP accesses everyone with no problem. I've also double-checked that "Everyone" in Security is allowed full control of the C drive and that Sharing is enabled for "Everyone".

I'd appreciate any other suggestions. Thanks again!

Are both machines in the same Workgroup? Using the same default Workgroup name on both machines etc.

Do you have a third party anti virus installed on these machines?

Can you post the ipconfig/all from both of these machines?

    1) Both machines are on the same Workgroup (and the Win8 computer communicates flawlessly with the Win7 machine). 2) Avast is running on the Win 7; AVG on the Win8. (Both are the free versions.) 3) The ipconfigs are attached. Thanks again.

The ipconfig's look fine. I'd have to place the blame on one of the AV's without any hesitation. I'm not seeing anything else here that could possibly be causing a problem like this.

I would either configure these A/V's to work with Windows or I would uninstall them using the special uninstall tool for both of them and go with Windows Defender on both machines.

Thanks again for the quick reply. I'm not sure what you mean by "...configure these A/V's to work with Windows...". Could you explain? Also, for the Win7 machine, I understand that Windows Defender pre-8 is anti-malware only, not anti-virus. Don't I still need an anti-virus app on that computer?

With the trial versions you should simply uninstall them using the tool, you can find the tools by searching for them. Uninstalling them is the only way to go here.

Sometimes they can be configured to work properly but I surely don't know how to configure every A/V.

I removed AVG (with their removal tool) and activated Windows Defender. No change, so I guess that lets the A/V off the hook. Any other ideas? Should I try over at sevenforums?
