Hi ,
My internet speed has suddenly deteriorated from what it was. I had a steady 6-7 Mb/s down and 1 Mb/s up , but now I have a constant speed like this :

2780908083.png

I use a DGN 1000 , its around 2 years old .I have talked to my ISP (Talk Talk UK) and they tell me they do not support my router and cant help me. Talked to Netgear via tech support as well and my settings seem to be correct with the newest firmware update.

So I'm thinking about buying one they (my ISP ) does support.Thought I'd ask here first before buying a new router online.

As suggested by Shadowjk HERE , i have followed both steps and have attached the relevant screens.

All my drivers are up to date using DriverMax and fully I'm up to date with Windows Update as well. Hope I posted enough info but just say and I will post more if I haven't.

Thanks.

Many thanks for following the steps as it can help

Based on the settings you have posted and what you have said I would most likely look into the router being the issue. Does this problem occur to other users on the network? Also may I ask you to reset your router to factory settings to see if that solves anything. Please be advised that any custom settings will be lost and you will have to re-configure them again.

Are you able to use another router to test if your router is causing the problem or if it is the exchange box or another setting on your computer? Lastly can to try and plug your adsl cable into the test socket in the wall. This is normally accessed by removing the front plate and will determine if any internal connections are causing problems since that socket is a direct line to the exchange.

Please note that this should only be done if you are using an adsl broadband service

Many thanks,
Josh! :)

Talk Talk initially said the same things as you suggested and Netgear also said the same thing both conversations over the phone. Strangely enough I don't have a test socket , Just the line runs into one box and when opened it just reveals the wires connected up. Maybe I have an old socket ? I should get a new one I guess. I have a friend who is an electrician and I'm sure he could do it.

So the settings on the router was set to factory default with out issue. I set up a new wireless connection like so:

WLAN
RegionEurope
Channel6(P)+10(S)
Wireless APEnabled
Broadcast NameEnabled
SecurityWPA2-PSK

You are correct in saying its ADSL and I am the only user using my connection. I have a few devices , 2 laptops and one phone all with the same speed. The laptop I am using now is 2 months old.

Could it be that my connection is being throttled by my ISP ? If so how would I find that out and are they legally obliged to tell me if they are ? My cap is 80 Gig per month and to be honest I don't download as much stuff as I used to.

I don't have access to another router , shall I just buy a new one since its fairly old and admittedly not the best one going. The choice is fairly limited to what they actually support. They pretty much want me to buy a branded TalkTalk router to offer full support , either that or some basic Netgear units.

It could be possible that your adsl port in the wall is old since the test socket was recently introduced when BT configure adsl connections.

I would not get a new router as of yet since routers tend to either work or not and very rarely slow internet speed unless it is really old.

Are you able to show me some statistics of your line and then I can predict if the speed is matching up with the line quality. In your router look for a statistic called 'Noise Margin & Line Attenuation'. These should be measured in dB.

An example of mine is below:

noisemargin.PNG

Lastly, do you know how far away you are from your exchange box or not? This can help when checking your noise margin

Many Thanks,
Josh! :)

Here you go mate. I live 3 miles away from my exchange (If that ). I understand what you was saying about the new BT sockets but it was fine before ,Just recently I have had the drop. Are they easy to change ? Looked on Amazon and they are fairly cheap.

Edit : As I mentioned above the router is 2 years old , I know this to be correct as Netgear checked when I registered the product via the call to them. Did it the day of purchase.

Thanks for the help really appreciate it Josh.

You could change it however I haven't done so myself and I would not recommend doing it unless you are a professional electrician since you would be messing with the only way of getting an internet connection.

Based on your stats, your noise margin is quite high typically it should be around 7-12dB. That being said you stated that you live about 3 miles from your exchange therefore this is acceptable. One issue that occurs to me is that your router is reporting a maximum speed of 3071Kbps download this equates to about 3Mbps. This would reflect the speeds that you are receiving.

Note   Note
You will most likely not achieve a constant 3Mbps since it would make the line unstable therefore the exchange will lower the speed slightly in order to maintain stability

Could you unplug and plug your router back in and see if this changes? If not then you may want to ring your ISP about the speeds you are receiving. Especially if you are paying for a higher speed when you physically won't be able to get. Please note that the speed that your router is reporting may be affected by capped speeds from ISP and the only way to see if you have been capped is by contacting them.

My apologies for not being able to offer a solid solution on your end since internet speeds are out of mine or yours management and can only be configured by your ISP :(

Sorry,
Josh

One of my best friends is an electrician and I will get him to have a look at it for me. I will give my ISP another ring and try and get them to pass me onto the "real tech support" people. They were unwilling to pass the call along last time as soon as I mentioned my Router brand and model.

As you know yourself when you make a call you just get an operator and they read through a checklist of a screen and its all pretty much scripted.Thats what happens when you pass customer care to a call center in a different country I guess. I'm not the most patient of people but I will have to bite my lip again and hopefully get some help from them.

So would you say I am only being sent that speed and its not an actual issue of my router crippling it ?

Off topic : I noticed you wanted a sig made in the "Sig Thread " ? If you send me a PM with what you want I will be more than happy to make you a few.

Thanks so much for the help.Appreciate it lots.

You are on a 18dB profile, join talktalkmembers forum and request for a faster profile, one of the OCE will change your profile to a stable faster profile. HTH.

I cannot be certain unless another router is tested. All I can say is that the maximum speed that your router is able to receive on the line is 3Mbps with your current settings. I would follow brummyfan's advice and request a faster profile to see if the downstream increases.
