but if you are right -imo- i should have never been able to access the share
(which I _could_ from the start)
    if any
    - permissions are not set right ("…within active directory…")
    - the server is a domain controller (which I think it isn't)
    - the share permissions where not set to "everyone" which they are
If you have access to the server you should know if it is a domain controller or not. Plus it is possible for the Administrator to remove and add share permissions at any time which is updated live, therefore it is possible that the everyone permission was once applied however it has now been removed.

Please open a command prompt and type the following:

    Code:
    net view
Does the server name list there? If not then you do not have any access to the server based on your location as in your computer is not on the same network as the server in terms of IP address or a router is not configured correctly to route information to the server.

    02 yes (>^)
    What is the share path?

    Note   Note
This is a share using Windows 7 but will be the same on the server side if using the GUI interface

The highlighted path on your share is the path that needs to be entered to access that share from a client.

If that fails then please test to see if the server is accessible by using the ping command from the client side and then ping the servers IP address for a response

01 no, I don't know, I did not configure the server and I'm not in the office right now.

02 there is _no_ (zero) administrator in said office, only me and users.

03 the share is _accessible_ now (with no constraints or passwords); problem is: I don't know why.
nobody's done anything including me;except what I told before.

04 the server was listed and was pingable (as I said) _the whole time over_.

05 server is on the same network, same router, same workgroup.

My apologies, I did try and read through the previous posts and couldn't find any ping results. If all devices are connected via a workgroup then the server isn't a Domain controller.

    no harm done.

    still the question remains:

    what went wrong,if windows 8 (home,that is) ~sometimes~

(over a long period;several days) refuses to "make a share visible"

and brings the beforementioned error when someone tries to map the old drive?

    any ideas?
