Can't Join Homegroup

I have a new laptop and have been unable to join my HomeGroup.

My network:
Desktop running Win 8 Pro (wired net connection)
Desktop running Win XP Home (wired net connection)
second Desktop running Win XP Home (wifi network connection)
I have just added a Win 8 basic laptop (wifi network connection)

There is a HomeGroup set up on the Win 8 Pro system.

The network for the Win 8 Pro & Win XP systems all work perfectly.

However, I can't get networking to work between the Win 8 Pro and the Win 8 Laptop.
The network between the Laptop and Win XP machines works perfectly.

I followed the instructions in the thread:
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15831-homegroup-join-windows-8-a.html

When I attempt to join the HomeGroup from the laptop, I get an unhelpful error message:
-When setting it up from the Settings menu, I get "Windows can't set up a homegroup on this computer"
-When I attempt to join from the Control Panel, I get "Homegroup encountered an error"

I ran the Homegroup troubleshooter on both machines with no success.

HELP! What else can I do?

This problem comes up pretty often but it's usually easy to fix just by removing all files in the Peer Networking folder. In your case this would be your Windows 8 Pro machine but also check the Windows 8 laptop.

The link below describes the process in more detail and shows a picture of the PeerNetworking folder. You must also go into folder options and click the "show hidden file and folders" so you can see the AppData folder. :)

Thank-you for a very fast response Chev65,

I deleted all the files in the Peer Networking folders of both computers. (I had to reboot the Win 8 Pro machine before one of the files could be deleted because Win told me it was in use). Then, I rebooted both computers and tried to join the homegroup again. This time the laptop gave me the message "Windows no longer detects a homegroup on this network" even though the laptop tol me that there was a homegroup on the Win 8 Pro machine.

I didn't stop the HomeGroupProvider service. The thread that suggests this relates to leaving a homegroup not joining one so I didn't think that I should do that. In addition, the thread that I originally looked at indicated that it needed to be running.

Am I right? What else do I need to do?

Additional Info

Here is some additional info....

When I look at File Manager, I can see the Win 8 machine from the Win 8 Pro & vice versa. However, when I try to access the computer, I get the message: "Windows cannot access \\LAPTOP". If I click on "Diagnose", Win doesn't find any problems. If I expand the window, it reports Error Code 0X80070035.

The same thing happens when I try to access the Win 8 Pro machine from the laptop.

First be sure and go to the Network and Sharing Center, then go to the Advanced Sharing Settings, make sure that Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing are turned on for both machines.

It's also required that you must leave the Homegroup from the Windows 8 Pro machine, then create a new Homegroup on the laptop then join that Homegroup from the Windows 8 Pro machine.

All the services that relate to the Homegroup should be started and set to Automatic, and delayed start usually works best.

Thanks again Chev65,

A question before I follow your instructions.....

When networking between the Win 8 Pro machine and the XP machines was set it, it was a very difficult process. Ultimately, I called MS tech support and it took a total of 3 hours on line with a Level I and then a Level II tech to get it set up. If I leave the homegroup on the Win 8 Pro machine, will it negatively impact the Win 8 Pro-XP network?

Out of curiosity, why would it be necessary to leave the Pro HomeGroup, establish one on the laptop, then join from the Pro? It seems like I would be doing the same thing that I have been doing but in reverse. - Just curious - I like to understand why I'm doing things so that I can learn for the future.

This won't effect the XP machine because it's connection is through the Workgroup rather than the Homegroup.

You can share Library folders with the XP machine by using the Homegroup sharing options of "Share With" specific people> choose "Everyone" will share the Library folders with the XP machine.

When the Homegroup gets messed up leaving the Homegroup is one of the criteria involved to fix the problem.

The reason for setting up the new Homegroup on the wireless machine is just to address a problem that Windows seems to have with wireless machines connection to a Homegroup. For some reason it works best if you create the new Homegroup on the wireless machine then Join from the wired machines. Deleting those files at PeerNetworking should fix the can't join problem.

I left the HomeGroup on the Desktop Win 8 Pro machine and created the HomeGroup on the Win 8 Laptop.

All the services listed in the following thread are running:
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15831-homegroup-join-windows-8-a.html

All of the files in the following folder on both computers are deleted:
C:\windows\serviceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking

When I try to join the HomeGroup from the Win 8 Pro machine, the "Personalize" page indicates that a HomeGroup was detected on the laptop. However, when I attempt to join the HomeGroup, I get the following message "Windows no longer detects a HomeGroup on this network"

What am I doing wrong??????

I've attempted a couple of things....

Based on the comment that Win 8 sometimes has trouble joining a HomeGroup from a wireless connection, I connected the laptop to a wired connection. - Still the same problem!

Just in case, I disabled the firewalls on both Win 8 machines and tried to join the HomeGroup again. - Still the same problem!

With the firewalls disabled and a wired laptop connection, I attempted to join the HomeGroup from both the laptop and desktop. - Still the same problem!

One other odd item....
When I attempt to join a HomeGroup, the code from the opposite computer is already pre-entered. This seems odd since this is supposed to be a security feature to prevent unauthorized people from joining a HomeGroup.

If the Homegroup password is showing up then most likely the Homegroup was still active and you need to leave the Homegroup from both machines. I've never heard of the password being entered by itself before that is very strange.

Any type of third party anti virus software can also create problems here.

Each time I re-attempted to set up networking, I left the HomeGroup, deleted the files in the PeerNetworking folders on both machines, rebooted both machines, checked to make sure that the necessary services were running on both machines, then set up a HomeGroup on one of the machines, then tried to join it from the other machine. It allowed me to set up a new HomeGroup and gave me a different code. I assumed that this would have been new clean HomeGroup. Right? ....or is there something else that I needed to do?

I'm not running a third party virus program. I'm using the Windows firewall and the native Windows Defender on both machines. Both machines came with a trial version of McAfee but I removed both of them using the downloaded McAfee removal tool.

Anything else I need to do?

I have still been fiddling around trying to get the HomeGroup working.

If I can't get the HomeGroup working, I rationalized that I should be able to set up networking using the same process that Win XP uses, i.e. joining the Workgroup. I searched and found the following thread:
Join or create a workgroup - Microsoft Windows Help

I followed the instructions but both the Win 8 desktop and laptop were already a member of the same Workgroup.
When I look in File Explorer, I can see the name of the opposite computer under the "Network" heading. However, when I click on it, I get the following error message: "Windows cannot access\\ASUS" (ASUS is the name of the other computer).

Are the Workgroup and HomeGroup problems related or is there something else that I need to do to enable Workgroup sharing.

I'd say that as long as McAfee is involved then most likely nothing is going to work, that is the worst A/V in the world from my experience. How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee products using the Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR)

Have you gone into the Network and Sharing Center then to the Advanced sharing settings, make sure that network discovery and file and printer sharing are turned on and allow windows to manage Homegroup connections needs to be on. These settings are required for any type of network sharing.

If you can post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all from these machines it might help me to narrow down the problem.

Thanks again Chev65,

Yes I understand the McAfee issues. I previously removed it from both computers using the method that you mentioned.

Here are screen shots of the ipconfig/all from both computers.

The desktop (Win 8 Pro) Host name is ASUS
The laptop (Win 8) Host name is LAPTOP (It's in 2 pieces since the listing was too long for one screen shot).

I should also add...
Both Win 8 computers can successfully access the internet, the XP computers on the network as well as the media server.

No real problems showing up in the ipconfig's.

It appears as if you aren't using DHCP in the first screen shot so you might try going back to DHCP there but I'm seeing no reason why those machines can't see each other here.

There is no reason to block out the DNS servers, it's the WAN IP that would give you away but that doesn't show up here.

I'm still looking at other possibilities.

I looked at the properties of the User on both computers. On the security tab on the desktop, it shows 4 "Unknown Accounts" that have no permissions. On the laptop, there are 2 Unknown Accounts with no permissions. I'll attach a screen shot of the window that shows the Unknown Accounts.

Is it possible that these accounts are causing the problem?
Is it safe to delete them?

I'm sorry that did not help.
I can call Belkin for life for free; can you get any information from your router company?

I'm still looking at other possibilities.

I looked at the properties of the User on both computers. On the security tab on the desktop, it shows 4 "Unknown Accounts" that have no permissions. On the laptop, there are 2 Unknown Accounts with no permissions. I'll attach a screen shot of the window that shows the Unknown Accounts.

Is it possible that these accounts are causing the problem?
Is it safe to delete them?

Those extra entries is what you end up with when you create a Homegroup, I have them also.

The important thing is that the default security settings are still set as default, you should see System with full control, User name with full control showing email of User, then it should say Home user then your user name but with no check marks, then Admin User name with full control.
