Network Printer Problem

My HP deskjet printer is hooked up to a Windows XP computer in which file and print sharing is enabled. Also the printer itself has sharing enabled and this serves as my network printer. After several hours I finally got the network printer to show up on my Windows 8 laptop and successfully print a test page. It is also showing under Devices and Printers and all looks good. The problem is that it doesn't show up as a "printer" option on any programs/apps that allow printing. I tried Notepad to test the printer and my network printer was not there. I also tried several other programs with no luck. Any ideas? Thanks!

I had similar problems with an HP printer -- and what I had to do was the following:
1) Connect the printer to the Win8 box through USB cable
2) Download the latest version of Win8-specific software and drivers from HP (this is IMPORTANT)
3) Install the printer in Win8 using the downloads
4) Disconnect the printer and remove it from Devices and Printers
5) Reconnect the printer to the wired network cable -- and reinstall it as a network printer.
