    Win 8 and WEP wifi?

Brand new Toshiba P875-S7102 laptop won't connect to clinic's 2net router set to WEP, running 802g. It does accept the password, but then goes into "checking network requirements" and after several seconds -about 23 of them - announces "Can't connect to this network". The adapter is Intel Wireless-N 2200, and works fine at four other places that are all WPA2 with various routers, g and n.

    Any ideas?

Any router still running WEP is running firmware that is way out of date, updating the firmware on this router may help but only if the firmware allows the router to use WPA2 with AES encryption.

Agreed about old crap, but not the issue. The router is a pretty new 2wire... it's not my facility and changing the encryption type is not an option. Two Samsung Notes and iPad all connect seamlessly, as does an older XP laptop - two of them, actually, mine and someone else's. Either Win 8 has the capability or it does not. I don't know which it is. As I think I noted, it connects to the point of getting the PW accepted (fails immediately if bogus PW is given), but then fails while "checking network requirements", whatever that means.

Most every driver for Windows 8 won't connect automatically with WEP security. It may work to create a wireless profile manually.

Windows tries to protect you from connecting to the WEP access points by not letting it happen automatically, or asking for your password like it used to with other systems.

Open the network and Sharing Center.

Select "Set up a new connection or Network"

Select "Manually connect to a wireless network"

Enter Network name- this is case sensitive.

    Save.

Now the problem you are likely having:

Ether choose the change settings or find the network profile you just created under Manage Wireless Networks, and open it up.

On the "Security tab" you will see Security Type is "No authentication (Open)". You likely have to set it to "Shared". Now you have to re-enter your security key.

Already done this, in various combinations. There is no "shared" choice... No authentication (Open) is followed immediately by the WPAs, couple of others after that, but no Shared. Pretty sure XP had a shared choice, but this 8. Hell, it doesn't even show WEP on this window.

Wait, yes it does, it's got its own field... whatever... still fails the checking.

Do you have access to the router, if so reboot the router by unplugging it from the power outlet for 2 minutes then plug it back in. Wait and check for connection.

Yeah, the three-finger salute -hardware version - is always worth trying. I'll hafta wait until the fat lady quits ****ing around on twit-face, but will def give it a shot. And let you know if it works, of course. Wonder wtf is going on with leaving off the "shared" option... oversight, or wht?

Okay... reset it, no joy. I'm suspecting either a wireless printer or a couple of wireless cameras are the culprits here. Maybe we can turn them off one at a time and see wha' hoppen...
