    Windows 8 Sharing

Just bought a new laptop which is a Windows 8 laptop. I have turned off all sharing via the "change advanced sharing setting".

However when I use my old laptop (on windows 7), I can access every file on the new laptop. Why is that even though I have turned off sharing. Am I doing something wrong?

Turning off Network Discovery and File and Printer sharing should do the trick although that doesn't actually un-share the C:>Users folder which is shared out by default.

If you want to lock the Users folders down on the Windows 8 machine you should go into the C:>Users folder, right click to properties then to the Sharing tab, click Advanced Sharing, remove the check mark to share this folder, hit Apply etc.

The 'Share' option is not ticked. Am still able to browse through every file on my new laptop from my old old laptop, which means anyone on the same network could do the same.

You must have checked the wrong one as this one is checked by Default, if the C:Users folder is unchecked for sharing then none of the folders which reside in the Users folder are accessible.

Besides that, turning off network discovery and file and printer sharing should have the same effect. I've tested this on all my machines and it works perfectly.

Another way to create isolation in a Workgroup is to create a Homegroup on the new machine, this will prevent any users in the local Workgroup from gaining access to the shared folders unless they are purposely shared out with Everyone' using the Homegroup style share settings.
