Hi guys, my windows ethernet network says 'unidentified network' every time i try and connect my Xbox to Xbox live through my laptop. Is there any way to solve this because i feel as though i have tried everything, and may as well go back to windows 7 if possible.

Other then stating the unknown network, are you able to establish a connection? Just curious, is your SSID disabled? If so try enabling it and then checking. It's the same on my home network...I've disabled the SSID, which just stops the broadcast of your network name, and all my wireless devices (laptops) have an extra network connection at the bottom of the list named unknown network. As soon as I enable it...the unknown network disappears. I always keep my SSID turned off...just another form of security for me.

I think you have to actually connect to the network through the device (XBox) network connection panel in the settings area...like I have to do with my Wii. It can be a lengthy process for some devices.

Updated my network driver, but it still doesn't work. I connect to the internet with a 3connect dongle and to xbox live through my laptop using ICS. it used to work on windows xp, but since windows 8 it has stopped.

It's not possible to share a 3G wireless connection using ICS which is made for wired connections only.

AdHoc is sharing a wireless connection, wireless to wireless, ICS is for sharing a wired connection, wired to wired and requires a secondary Ethernet adaptor. Trying to share a wireless connection to ICS was never a supported configuration. It may have worked in the old days but not anymore, and it definitely won't work with Windows 8, many have tried to no avail.

With the 3G connection you could set up a hosted wireless network using the command prompt or the connectify software.

Connectify - Turn your PC into a Wi-Fi Hotspot and Get Faster Internet

Connectify has a Pro version that may be able to do what you want but it costs money, still it's made to share a wireless connection not a wired one.

This one shows how to set up a hosted wireless network using the command prompt.

Or you can install a virtual router. :)
