problems connecting to the Win 8 laptop from Win 7

Have a question regarding "Local Account". I'm having problems connecting to the Win 8 laptop from Win 7 as it will not accept my sign in credentials. With that, am I to assume that this is because the credential aren't "Local", and thus this is what this is for???

It will not accept the "Microsoft" account I use to log into Win 8 laptop.

With that, if I choose to go with the "local account" can I easily switch back to the Microsoft one?

    Thanks.

Win 8 is a pain in the arse at times

If you cannot login remotely using a Microsoft account then the reason is not the account type but instead something else like for instance that the Microsoft account you are using has not allowed remote connections, or in case of network sharing the network discovery and file & printer sharing are turned off.

Are you sure it will not work? To remotely connect to a Microsoft account, remote machine is no longer the domain you need to use hence you cannot login remotely to a Microsoft account with username Computername\Username.

See what I mean with this. The explanation is valid both when using RDP or just trying to access a networked Windows 8 computer with a Microsoft Account:

Login in remotely to a Windows 8 local account you provide your username as Computername\Username, like for instance here I am connecting to my other laptop using my local account Kari on that remote machine:

I also have a Microsoft account on that other machine, let's say it is kari@domain.com. To input credentials of that account I need first click the Use another account. At this point the login dialog shows a wrong domain, local machine, because that is the last domain I have used to login to this machine:

However, when I type my Microsoft account name kari@domain.com and password, the dialog changes the domain automatically and I can login by clicking OK:

    Short version:
    • Click Use another account
    • Type your Microsoft account name (email address!)
    • Type your password
    • Click OK

If remote connections or network discovery and file sharing are allowed you will now be logged in.

    Thanks Kari,

Quite sure. In fact I've been trying to figure it (and other sharing problems) out most of the day. What I'm trying to do is share a folder/file from a Win 7 machine to my Win 8 laptop but sharing/networking always gives me headaches.

Anyway here's the weird thing - I can see the laptop in Win 7, but can't connect to it using remote desktop. And any shared files I create leads to that box, but it won't accept my credentials.

Something to note here is that I'm not making the file public - that is, I'm not choosing "Home Group" or "Everyone" as a profile, I'm attempting to use advanced sharing...

Anyway I'm sure I'm screwing something up, I just don't know what????

Also, I can not for the life and times of me figure out why Win 7 won't connect to the Win 8 laptop using remote desktop, when all works fine going the other way (Win 8 connects to 7 just fine).

Anyway I've been at this a while so some outside advice is more than welcome.

    Thanks.

OK, Kari, I think I'm missing something...

I'm trying to log into the Windows 8 machine from Windows 7. If I try to use RDP, I don't get the image you show (obviously). And clicking on the notebook icon in Win 7 gets me the image in my first post. Hence I'm not getting what you're saying...

    Sorry.

Are you sure that incoming remote connections are allowed on that 8 machine:

And then sharing settings on both machines. First under Private:

... and then under All Networks:

... and last but not least, both machines belong to same workgroup and if not, the workgroup name is changed to same and PC rebooted after the workgroup name change.

It should work if all these settings are correct on both machines, I cannot remember having any issues connecting between machines on my network.

Thanks Kari, I just figured out what you were saying about logging into Windows 8 from 7 and was able to do so. This helped...

If remote connections or network discovery and file sharing are allowed you will now be logged in.

So, I'm now able to connect remotely. That's solved

As far as the sharing issue, yes, I quite sure that incoming remote connections are allowed on that 8 machine. I've checked that box quite a few times.

Anyway now that I'm able to connect remotely, let me try this share issue again. I'll post back in a few minutes.

    Thanks.

OK, good to know. I just got the Seven machine booted for screenshots, the procedure is the same as screenshots in my first post show with only minor changes in dialogs.

For future readers of this thread, to connect remotely to a Microsoft Account on a Windows 8 machine from a Windows 7 / Vista machine:

    • If the last remote user from this computer has been the Microsoft Account you want to use and the dialog shows correct email address, just type the password and click OK:

    • If the last user is not the Microsoft Account you want to use, click Use another account:

    • Type the Microsoft Account email address and its password, click OK:

    That's it.
