Solved Enable/Disable Airplane Mode with CMD or shortcut?

Anyone out there knows if it's possible to enable/disable (turn on/turn off) Airplane Mode either using CMD or with two separated shortcuts (i.e. desktop shortcut 1 enables Airplane Mode, desktop shortcut 2 disables Airplane Mode)?

Thanks for your reply :)

That is somewhat what I'm looking for, it does help - thanks!

The reason I ask is because I am using my PS3 Controller alongside with Pinnacle Game Profiler to basically control Windows. And very often I change my DNS settings in my Router settings, and to "enable" this setting without rebooting, I need to either disconnect WI-FI and enable it, or enable/disable airplane mode.

So in other words it would be really nice to have a shortcut to enable/disable either Wi-Fi or airplane mode.

There is three ways I can map this to a specific button on my PS3 controller.
  1. Create a .bat file, with a cmd command to enable/disable Airplane Mode (then create a shortcut to that .bat file, with administrative rights in properties)
  2. Create two desktop shortcuts, one enables Airplane Mode (or just disables Wi-Fi), the second disables Airplane Mode (or just enables Wi-Fi)
  3. Map a keyboard shortcut (if one exists) to the PS3 controller

I could use the Fn key + F10 and map that to Pinnacle Game Profiler, but as the Fn key is not even recognized (to my understanding) by Windows, it's not possible to emulate an Fn command.

So in other words, is it possible that any of the above would be possible to do in the feature (or now :D)?

Rene,

I'm working on a couple of autoit scripts to create shortcuts for what you are wanting to turn airplane mode on or off in one click. So far they are working perfectly. I'm going to create a tutorial on this later tonight, and will post back with a link to it when it's finished. :)

Thank you for your reply :)

I have tested the two .exe's both in Windows, and with my PS3 controller. On my PS3 controller I have added a cycle command, so when I press L1 button for the first time it launches "Turn On Airplane Mode.exe", when I press L1 button for the second time it launches "Turn Off Airplane Mode.exe".

It works absolutely flawlessly, really good work :)

Thank you so much for doing this, I only wish there were something I could do in return!

Again, thanks a 1000 times :)

How about a Windows RT solution

You're most welcome Rene. :)

Stumbled across your Airplane Mode toggle today. Thank you. But, the EXE will not work with Windows RT. As there is no way to disable connected standby on a Surface RT, having quick access to the Airplane Mode (wireless settings) toggle, or using a single click solution would be a (battery)life saver for RT devices.

Navigating to the Wireless Setting screen each time I wake up/put to sleep my Surface sort of defeats the whole "always ready" concept. As I only use my Surface every few days, my other option is to keep it plugged in 24/7. But that's hard to do when it's in my carry bag. Any ideas

UPDATE: Ok, never mind. Tried your Network flyout shortcut and that works fine on the RT. At least I can access it from the Start Screen with one tap. Any reason why the shortcut opens desktop mode though? Would be nice if that didn't have to happen. Oh, and thanks again.

No, but the Surface RT will not allow the EXE to run on the device. I assume that's due to RT only permitting App Store applications (actually, that's what the error message suggests).

I tried your Network flyout shortcut (as mentioned in my updated post above) and that works fine. At least I am down to two steps to toggle AP Mode on/off. But it launches desktop mode while opening the flyout. Any way to prevent that. Tried the downloadable shortcut, and the two options you provided for creating your own. But they all launch desktop mode when you tap the tile on the Start screen. Not a biggie, but unlike a Windows 8 device, my RT device spends most of its time on the Start Screen.

Could the EXE with the keystroke instructions be turned into a batch file? I know that would run on RT. Can create a shortcut to the batch, with a link to your icons. Would love to put these on my Start screen to toggle Airplane Mode on/off.

Yep, that would be the no desktop apps for your RT message.

I'll do some testing and playing with a .bat or .vbs file tonight to see what I can come up with. :)

You can't run the third party EXE on RT, so the Autoit script from the tutorial won't work.

As I only use my Surface every few days, my other option is to keep it plugged in 24/7.
T[DEL]hen use hibernation. Configure all power plans to your preference. E.g. if it goes to sleep after 30 minutes, set it to hibernate after 35 or whatever. See also http://www.eightforums.com/tutorial...u-add-remove-sleep-hibernate-windows-8-a.html

That way your tablet won't discharge while you don't use it for days. You'd have to wait for it to come from hibernation a little longer than from connected standby, but then you won't have to mess with the airplane mode :)[/DEL]

Shawn, you can't do it with CMD on RT, but sending keys with VBS might work, unless VBS is crippled on RT (and I'd suspect just that :)

Hello Vadim,

I don't have a RT to test on, so I'm concerned about a .vbs file as well.

Jim,

If you would, please download and run the .vbs file attached below in your Windows RT to verify if it will be allowed to run. If it runs and you click on "Open" to approve, it'll only give you the message box saying that this is just a test, and will not do anything else.

Hi Shawn,

I don't have RT as well, but Jim does :) Yet I think you'd need to test something along sendkeys | VBScript | SS64.com to get an idea right away.

[DEL]But like I said, the true problem here is not the Airplane Mode access, but the loss of the battery charge while the tablet sits for a few days. Airplane Mode is the workaround Jim has developed :) Hence, hibernation is the cure, not the shortcut, although I can see why it could be useful in general.[/DEL]

I just remembered why I used AutoIt to begin with was due to the :winkey: key limitation in VBS not being able to use :winkey: + I in the script to open the Settings charm. :(

I doubt that a .bat file would work either in RT.

The Test.vbs file opened fine on the Surface RT. Got the acknowledgement message as expected.

Regarding BAT files, I use them all the time to copy updated Access front ends from our server to a users C drive. I just executed a BAT on my Surface RT. It created a folder and copied two files to my C:/access folder (although I can't run them on the RT). So, I believe a BAT would work on Windows RT, although a specific instruction may fail. If you set it to view (echo/PAUSE) I could troubleshoot any glitches.
