Enable/Disable Airplane Mode with CMD or shortcut?

  1. #11

No, but the Surface RT will not allow the EXE to run on the device. I assume that's due to RT only permitting App Store applications (actually, that's what the error message suggests).

I tried your Network flyout shortcut (as mentioned in my updated post above) and that works fine. At least I am down to two steps to toggle AP Mode on/off. But it launches desktop mode while opening the flyout. Any way to prevent that. Tried the downloadable shortcut, and the two options you provided for creating your own. But they all launch desktop mode when you tap the tile on the Start screen. Not a biggie, but unlike a Windows 8 device, my RT device spends most of its time on the Start Screen.

    Jim,

Is the message you get when you try to run the .exe anything like OPTION THREE in the tutorial below from SmartScreen?

Could the EXE with the keystroke instructions be turned into a batch file? I know that would run on RT. Can create a shortcut to the batch, with a link to your icons. Would love to put these on my Start screen to toggle Airplane Mode on/off.

Yep, that would be the no desktop apps for your RT message.

I'll do some testing and playing with a .bat or .vbs file tonight to see what I can come up with.

You can't run the third party EXE on RT, so the Autoit script from the tutorial won't work.

Then use hibernation. Configure all power plans to your preference. E.g. if it goes to sleep after 30 minutes, set it to hibernate after 35 or whatever. See also Power Options Menu - Add or Remove Sleep or Hibernate in Windows 8

That way your tablet won't discharge while you don't use it for days. You'd have to wait for it to come from hibernation a little longer than from connected standby, but then you won't have to mess with the airplane mode :)

Shawn, you can't do it with CMD on RT, but sending keys with VBS might work, unless VBS is crippled on RT (and I'd suspect just that :)

    Hello Vadim,

I don't have a RT to test on, so I'm concerned about a .vbs file as well.

    Jim,

If you would, please download and run the .vbs file attached below in your Windows RT to verify if it will be allowed to run. If it runs and you click on "Open" to approve, it'll only give you the message box saying that this is just a test, and will not do anything else.

    Hi Shawn,

I don't have RT as well, but Jim does Yet I think you'd need to test something along sendkeys | VBScript | SS64.com to get an idea right away.

But like I said, the true problem here is not the Airplane Mode access, but the loss of the battery charge while the tablet sits for a few days. Airplane Mode is the workaround Jim has developed Hence, hibernation is the cure, not the shortcut, although I can see why it could be useful in general.

I just remembered why I used AutoIt to begin with was due to the key limitation in VBS not being able to use + I in the script to open the Settings charm.

I doubt that a .bat file would work either in RT.

The Test.vbs file opened fine on the Surface RT. Got the acknowledgement message as expected.

Regarding BAT files, I use them all the time to copy updated Access front ends from our server to a users C drive. I just executed a BAT on my Surface RT. It created a folder and copied two files to my C:/access folder (although I can't run them on the RT). So, I believe a BAT would work on Windows RT, although a specific instruction may fail. If you set it to view (echo/PAUSE) I could troubleshoot any glitches.
